What to do?

Just noticed this weekend the front trim strip on my extremely new Jay Feather 23RLSW appears to be shrinking, potentially opening holes for water and water damage. Caulk it myself, or take it to the dealer for repair? It's about a 1/4" open gap at each end of the trim strip. Seriously looks like the vinyl (?) trim has shrunk away from the original clear caulking. Photos attached - arrows on the full frontal view show where the holes are located. Thanks,

Roger

If it was mine, I'd take it to the dealer.

I too would take it to the dealer. I would think black, would tend to shrink more since it would absorb more heat. That was a question I discussed with Jayco when we got ours. They put black tank covers over the propane tanks. I asked them what happens, when its 120 outside here in Phoenix, and the tanks are in direct sunlight...how hot do you think they will get? I got white tank covers. Do you know its ILLEGAL to pain your tank a dark color? It is, tanks have to be a light reflective color.
That trim has shrunk quite a bit wonder if it was cut short to begin with?

Good Luck, let us know what happens.

Amazing how dumb a business can be. Take it to the dealer & make sure it gets fixed & Jayco finds out about the crap work they did.

I noticed the same on my 2012 this spring. I applied a little matching caulk.

It actually looks like a possible dealer attempt at a cosmetic repair. The clear caulk matches nothing on the TT, and it's moderately sticky besides. You may have noticed it's collecting small debris.

We're leaving for an extended trip early Tuesday AM - odds are I can't get it into the dealer for service, so I'll have to do something myself. Suggestions on what material to use?

Thanks,

Roger

If your going to repair it yourself, clean all the old stuff off as best you can. Then get a tube of ProFlexRV. You'll probably do a better job than the factory. Good luck!

Diamond Plate buckled

We bought ours in August and just noticed in April the front Diamond plate was buckled and detached at the bottom. It's booked in to get repaired in Sept when there's no rush. The trim looks to be ok. I added a support on the under side to keep the plate in place until it goes in to get repaired or replaced.

rkresge, my trailer is in storage so when I get it this weekend I'll check that area to see if I have the same issue.

I don't know how your dealer service is, but here in SoCal it takes 3 + weeks to even get a unit in for any kind of warranty work.

I would fix it on my own since you have a trip planned, but take photos to show the dealer and have them replace the trim later.

My 23RLSW is only 2 months old, but you want see crap work take a look at these pics of the door lock dead bolt. I have a warranty claim now with Jayco to make them replace the door and door frame. No excuse for this kind of work.

I don't want to get started on quality again, we'll just leave it at that.Click image for larger version

That's completely uncalled for. Looks like a hack job the dealer did. Good luck on getting repaired. Sucks.

Not sure who did it, Jayco or my dealer, but both are at fault as far as I'm concerned. Jayco for not checking that the deadbolt worked before leaving the factory and correcting it there.

Or my dealer for trying to correct the issue with a mickey mouse fix.

I will find out.

I think the door is bowed and they tried to make this work. I can't see how the wall would be bowed as they are assembled flat and vacuum bonded.

That door is bad. I actually just adjusted the strike plate for my door because it really needed a good slam to get it to latch. But nothing like what you're dealing with.

Talked with my dealers service this AM, they tell me the black vinyl strip on the front is just cosmetic, it covers a screw strip and there's no danger of water damage. But it sure looks bad! 😉

Yea, it's camping for me, no doubt. At least I can still use it while this is being resolved.

But I still get tired of seeing these kind of issues and people making excuses for the manufactures and saying that's just the nature of the beast.

I guess we have no choice and just have to accept the quality isn't there on most entry level and mid priced RV's.

Just think how much paperwork, phone calls, and costs are generated because of a problem that should have been caught at the factory before shipment.

Not to mention a P.O'd customer and negative comments for the builder.

Its just a cosmetic deal.

That strip is cosmetic, the screws should be individually sealed. No rush, make the dealer replace the strip under warranty.

My 2013 WhiteHawk 30DSRE has the same strip and similar gaps at each end. It has been that way since I bought it new and so far it has never led to any problems or water intrusions. Cosmetically it looks not so great but functionally it seems to have had no impact. Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about it but would likely just perform a "do it yourself" caulking repair.

I won't take my RV back to the dealer unless it is something that I just cannot do myself. Otherwise, I trust my own workmanship better than theirs. Sad but true.

And another thing, again not a big deal. For other 23RLSW owners, plus similar models that have a sliding door between bath and bedroom, watch out for the snap/strap that holds the door in place for travel. On our second trip out, mine ripped out of the screw that holds it to the door frame. Easy fix: I just removed the screw and put a flat washer under it to provide a better grip on the strap. Should solve the problem.

I know there's some validity to quality control complaints, but as far as I'm concerned the alternative is substantially higher cost that I don't think the industry can sustain. Friend of mine used to say this: "Good, fast, cheap. Pick two!" That kind of says it all about the RV industry in general.
