White Hawk 28DSBH top bunk??????

For those of you that have this model or ones that don't have a ladder for the top bunk. What is your solution for access to the top bunk for the kidos?? Thanks.

I haven't seen, heard or come up with a good solution yet. I did build a prototype out of some 2x4's that I wasn't thrilled with.

We looked at a 28DSBH, and a very similar Eagle with the same floorplan. The Eagle had an industrial-looking steel ladder that came with it, pretty unattractive looking. There are bunk ladders available on the RV parts websites, the aluminum ones look a little nicer than the steel.

We ended up buying a Jay Flight 28BHBE, similar floorplan. It has a nice cabinet at the foot of the bunks with a built-in matching wood ladder that pivots inward for storage and travel, and back out for the kids to use when camping.

The salesman told me that starting soon, bunk ladders will no longer be included due to the liability. You'll have to buy it yourself, then the liability is on the user, not Jayco. Not sure how true this is.....

Here is what we did on our Whitehawk 28DSBH.
Ladder was 60" Chrome Bunk Ladder purchased through Camping World/
Ladder was cut down so slide could operate without having to remove ladder.

Here are some photos...

The mounting hardware was included with the ladder. The ladder lifts off and is easily removable.
I used a hacksaw to shorten the ladder sufficiently, so that it could be left in place while the slide goes in or out.

Is this the ladder you used? It looks like it has different mounting hardware on top.

I was hoping for a solution like this but was thinking it was going to be permanent. I like how this is removable. Can you link us to the ladder you used with that hardware?

This is the ladder we used...

http://www.campingworld.com/shopping...FYMWMgod9GEAgA

" Includes hooks to slip onto bunk’s edge and hardware for permanent installation".

It comes with the brackets. At first, I used it just "hooked" over the top, and after a couple of days, the veneer started to separate. I then mounted the brackets as shown in the photos, cut down the ladder, and all was well. The screws that hold the brackets even re-attached the veneer! I like having the ladder easily removable. It makes getting access to the areas under the bunk very easy. Good installation all the way around!

Thank you for the link. How strong do you think the supports are? Will a full grown adult be safe using the ladder?

According to the manufacturer, it is rated for 300 lbs! Quality looks good, as far as my standards go!

Well, I don't doubt the manufacturer rating or the fact that it really does look great. The weight rating is all dependent upon the installation though. You feel that it is sturdy enough for an adult as is? You feel that location of the brackets on the top bunk are strong enough?

I think that it will hold up well to adult use. Shortening the ladder actually helps, because the steeper angle carries the weight better. The brackets just hold the ladder in place, and most of the weight is carried on the foot of the ladder. After a month on the road, and daily use by a 160 lb teenage boy, it seems to be holding up. I have used it on several occasions, with my substantial bulk, and it was solid. I think it should be up to the task.

http://img1.targetimg1.com/wcsstore/...3/13130423.jpgBought a Cosco step stool from Target doe about $19.99. Works great and folds up and out of the way when the kids are done sleeping. We just fold it up and lay it on the top bunk when not in use.

Thanks, I ordered this ladder today in black. I like the look of the install and also like that you can easily remove it and store on top bunk when not in use.

We have a 2010 31bhds, I found an aluminum ladder at one of the camping web site that is made for bunks, it has a hook on each rail to hook on to the bunk, you will need to cut it to your length but come with instructions how to measure and cut that put caps on the cut end( they came with ladder) the nice part is its light enough that the kids cam set it up when they want and when we are traveling we just take it off and put it on the bunk. I will try and get at make and model # for you and get some pictures and post them.
