Whitehawk kitchen exhaust fan
This was our longest trip of the year so far, I had the time to read some Trailer Life magazines, read an article on installing a SAM-1 kitchen exhaust fan, then decided to look at our exhaust fan and realized that our exhaust fan flap is locked in place, presumably for travel. Had to stand on a block of wood and push up on the 2 tabs and pull outwards, now our exhaust fan works great ! LOL, never saw any mention in the (maybe I missed it) owner's manual nor was it mentioned during our walk through. Still learning !

I kinda like that design. My brothers trailers have little tabs that swing down to hold the flap closed. On one of the trailers, the tabs don't hold the door closed anymore, and the other one the tabs came loose and the flap blow off on the highway. Not Jayco trailers btw.

That vent is super hard to open when new but over time it gets easier to open.

At the PDI, the tech could barely deal with it. Managed to unlatch it on the first trip. Hasn't been latched since. I might latch it for winter storage.

Same here. Unlatched it once and it remained that way for a long time. Can't remember when I tried to close it again, but that was harder than unlatching it.
Will try to remember to latch it again when it gets winterized.

On our PDI, the tech showed us that the fan cover does come out, but he didn't - or we didn't quite get it - say that you have to push in on tabs. We are going to take a tall step-stool with us to reach ours, but yeah, now we know about the tabs, it should be easier. Really hate the smoke alarm going off.

I've heard it's hard at first but we've never cooked inside or used the fan....

I've only unlatched ours once, and it was a pain in the neck (and fingers) to get open. I do keep it latched though as it's a great entry point for bugs, and there's nothing worse than a mosquito buzzing you while you're trying to sleep.

Same thing on our 2013 White Hawk 31DSLB. I release one side at a time to open it. During colder trips when using the heater I close it when not cooking as the heater exhaust is below it and I always worried about fumes coming in.

I opened mine finally, but then had to listen to it flap in the wind all night. Has to be a better way...

We beat the bugs by running a small (3/8" wick) oil lamp as a night light. We keep it filled with citronella (Tiki Torch) fuel.
