Will a F150 tow a Whitehawk 33BHBS?

Greetings all,

My wife and I are looking at a new travel trailer after owning a used Holiday Rambler 2007 Savoy SE for a bit (6500LBS). We are looking at the 2015 White Hawk 33BHBS, but have a few concerns. we are going from a 30' to roughly a 37' trailer and adding about 600lbs so we're not sure how my 2012 F150 5.0 will handle it. We REALLY like the trailer and it has such a great set of options it's hard to find together. Also, I'm 6'4" and my wife is 5'11". My 6 year old is 4'4" and my 3 year old is 45", so if I'm going to keep a trailer a long time...need some good options for taller/larger people.

Really appreciate the feedback!

Thank you.

You'll need to provide the details on the F150 to help. Axle ratio, Max Tow?

Also, curious if you looked at the 28DSBH? It's 32' and about 6000 lbs with propane and options, so closer to what your used to and the F150 can likely handle it, depending on your specs.

Just bought one and it has plenty of head room. Probably same as 33, with crowned roof.

Axel ratio is 3.73 locking rear axel 7350#GVWR package. I don't have max tow in it.

I do have the OEM brake controller in the truck. But the sticker simply says trailer tow package.

The smartelleck in me wants to tell you that most people on here will tell you the ford f150 will tow every trailer made...Most will give you all kinds of numbers that justify their lil f150s pulling their monsterous trailers...Me personally my 2 grand daughters and my life is worth more than saving a few bucks on the right tow vehicle!!!!! I bought a trailer thinking my tow vehicle would actually tow it with no problem, after all all the numbers added up but in reality it really just didnt work safely...This is a subject I suggest you do ALOT of research on until you fully understand it and then do the configuration out yourself......after all its your FAMILY thats going in the truck, not theres!!!!!! All you have to do is drive down the highway and pay attention to the RVs being pulled down the road ,alot of them are being pulled by an inadequate tow vehicle....JMO

Exactly my point. There is what the truck can do in the "book" then there is reality. The truck really had no issue. Pulling my old one was no problem. I want to get some feedback from someone that has pulled the BHBS with my truck config. I can't see going to a diesel for the amount I tow.

We have a Whitehawk 30DSQB(35 feet total)...7500 lbs loaded...was using a Chevy Avalanche(1/2 ton) TV in the beginning....traded for 2014 Chevy 2500HD(3/4 ton)(6.0 gasser with 3.73)....with the Avalanche it felt like I had 7500 lbs pushing me all the time and TV was under a constant strain even though the numbers all fit...just pulled with the 3/4 ton for the first time and really felt like I was in control at all times...much more relaxing 3 hours down the highway!!!

I tow the 28dsbh with the F150. Its comfortable but I wouldn't push it anymore. Eventually we will get a bigger truck and a 5th wheel.

On some other RV forums you might be absolutely correct..., but I have found the JOF community to be a fairly grounded and realistic group of folks

Your point about doing a lot of research is spot-on!

Welcome to JOF

The 33BHBS is a nice TT, and at 37ft long insuring that you have an adequate TV is a smart move on your part.

With a 8,500lb GVWR, if one were to load the TT to it's maximum (most don't), the loaded tongue weight would be 1,105lbs to 1,275lbs (13% to 15%)....., and the tongue weight comes of the TV's payload capacity (GVWR).

Jayco's published UVW is 6,610lbs, but the actual factory ship weight will be around 7,060lbs (check yellow sticker on TT), add in another 100lbs for dealer stuff (battery, etc.)......, so figure 7,160lbs as your starting point.

Just an example: UVW 7,160lbs + Cargo 600lbs (no fluids) = 7,760lbs loaded TT weight. So 7,760 @ 13% - 15% = 1,009lbs to 1,164lbs loaded tongue weight (subtracted from TV payload capacity). Everyones loading habits are different, so take this into consideration with your family of four.

Where most 1/2 ton trucks fall short with the heavier TT's is the "available" payload capacity to support the TT's loaded tongue weight and the WDH weight (about 50lbs), even when the published Tow Rating is adequate.

Actual Tow Ratings: http://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3866

If you want to know how much "available payload capacity" your 2012 F-150 has, take your F-150 to a CAT scale and weight it under loaded conditions (full fuel, passengers, cargo), then subtract the CAT scale weight from the GVWR noted on your driver's door. The CAT scale visit will take only a couple of minutes and about $9.

Without the CAT scale data, I'm tending to think the 33BHBS is going to exceed one or more of your F-150 (as configured) weight limits under loaded conditions.

Hope this helps in your do-dilegence.

Bob

All...thank you very much for this feedback. We ultimately choose the 28ft model. We would like to take some extended trips and the white knuckle towing wasn't very fun. The other thing that sold us was the customer service reviews from Jayco. I have always wanted a Jayco, so we are pretty excited. Found one with the Chil and Stor and the glacier package.

Thank you again...really appreciate the support from the community. Which I happy to report to now be a part of!

And more importantly, it should be a far easier tow!

You'll love it! We have a 8 & 11 year old and there is plenty of room.

Happy camping!

Will a F150 tow a Whitehawk 33BHBS?

If the OP is 6'4" then I would never recommend a trailer with the entertainment console at the foot of the bed like the 28DSBH. I have a friend that's 6'4 and he had a Kodiak with the same setup. He had to build a padded stand next to the bed that allows him to sleep diagonally.

OP,
The 33 is a beast. I think it's a great floor plan but once weighted down will get heavy quick. You may want to see if someone with a 33 can post their CAT Scale results so you get a true idea of whether you're going to overload that F150.

edit. Sorry, I didn't realize 2 posts up that you got a 28DSBH. Gotta love Tapatalk.
Would be interested if you are having any issues with the bed.

I did lay in the bed and had zero issues with it. The console actually has about a 3-4 inch gap between the entertainment center and edge of the bed. So I'm all set...however, much bigger may be a challenge.

Oh and as an aside, I did get on the roof at the dealer. While overall impressed, I pointed out a couple issues with some of the sealing jobs. Dealer said they would fix (the biggest one would be enough to put a piece of twine through. I'll be checking their work...

Probably a good decision in the end. We have a 32BHDS and tow with a '11 F-350 CC diesel and my day to day towing experiences tell me a F150 might be possible but I doubt it would be very enjoyable.

What is the payload rating for your truck? With your family all riding along even the 28DSBH will overload your rear axle if you don't load it carefully.

I have a 2013 f150 7350 GVWR with 1570lbs payload. My real payload from the scale with me aboard is about 1200lbs. With my wife and 2 kids along we are within 36lbs of our rear axle limit with a 28BHS Swift which is listed about 600lbs less than the whitehawk. The tongue weight can climb quickly past the published values.

A scale visit highly recomended.

I tow my 32BHDS , weighs about 9200lbs ready to camp, with my Excursion. We have traveled from Maine to Disney with it and have not had any issue towing unless we went up into the mountains of NY.
Last weekend my Excursion went down just before we hitched up to head out. I used my 2013 F-150 with the Ecco-boost engine, it is rated to tow 9600lbs, to tow us out to the CG. While the tow experience was ok I was aware that the F-150 took longer to stop and with the P rated tires I felt some squisyness, for a lack of a better term, from the rear end.
If my Excursion needs to be replaced I will need to look for a 3/4 ton TV.

Here is a location for a calculator that lets you plug in all of the information regarding your tow vehicle, trailer specs with tolerances. It uses all the information regarding both the tow vehicle and trailer and both combined. Should answer your questions. Most info on your truck and trailer can be found on line.
