Wind and awning

For those that have the power awnings . How much wind can they take. It seems everytime we are camping I am opening and closing the awning. It sunny but then there is wind and the awning is blowing up toward the trailer so in it goes. I did make the PVC supports to tie it down but they are a pain. How strong of winds do you leave them out , I wish I had gotten a manual awning on my Eagle, thinking of having it changed over.

I do wish I could still have my manual awning as well. That being said, it is nice to be able to retract during a storm without going outside. Mine handles quite a bit of wind. It's 21' and we almost always leave it out. I have no idea what number it correlates to for mph because we don't have a weather station. I've listened to it clack in the wind enough times to know when it sounds uncomfortable to me. Some roll it in at a slight breeze. Just depends on what you are comfortable with. If we are going to get a good thunderstorm, it goes in. That's my only hard and fast rule.

I've thought about the tie downs, but if I have to roll it up in a hurry because of an incoming storm, I don't want to have to run out and undo them.

I tie ours down. What are the supports for? I tie ours down using a strap over the roller and a chain and spring to allow some give. No need to pull it down taught. Never had any issues with 35 mph gusts.

I was told you should not tie down the electric awning without supports under the roller to the ground. So I made those adjustable PVC ones someone made here on the forum. The electric awnings don't have the supports the manual ones do. Grumpy what type of spring do you use. Do you leave it out at night. Thanks all

I'm using the springs from a awning tie down set that I bought years ago. We had it out for 3 months straight with the exception of one day when there was "severe" weather predicted. I know several people who also have PINNACLES that had their's tied down 24/7 for several months as well.

As to the supports, you don't need to pull it down tight, there should be a slight amount of slack in the tie down your just trying to keep it from going up.

I use trucker jack poles as they are stronger and then ratcheting straps to stakes in the ground.. you can find photos in the mod section where I was showing my screen room.

Wind and Awings.

I pull mine in if in doubt. The wind can rip the cover and bend the arms very easily. I to prefer the older manual type.

On my old camper (pop-up), we had to take it down if it got real bad. Stayed at Cherrystone on the bay a couple years ago and a microburst took the awning about 50ft. in the air. Then it came crashing down on someone elses camper..not good. I guess I faired pretty good because another campsite lost their outside potty tent!

For my electric awning I use a couple of milk jugs (filed with water) and bungees to tie down the front. It can handle a good breeze before I retract.

Watched a severe T storm destroy every extended awning in the camp ground. You can't tie anything down that a severe storm can't rip apart. We never leave it out.

I think that would take an upgrade. They make one that comes with the wind sensor. Haven't seen anything that is an accessory add on.

Does anyone know if there is a more heavy duty electric awning out there. Something with stronger arms

Not really.

We had the Carefree on our SENECA and the Dometic that is on the PINNACLE functions much better. There is really no issue with the arms. If the wind picks it up the arms will just fold up against the TT or FW just like it was rolled up, they will not go up on the roof or over the unit. The only thing that will end up on the roof is the fabric. The hydraulic shocks will then pull everything back down. I had this happen several times with mild gusts when we had the SENECA that is why I feel the Dometic is a much better awning. After that I started tying it down, with no supports, and have never had any issues.

We have an electric awning and got the camco tie downs with the springs. Should I not be using those with an electric awning? With our PUP we had a manual awning and those worked well so I assumed they would be fine for this awning as well.

I have a Dometic on this one and had the Carefree on the last. Dometic unit I like better for several reasons. Do you have the adjustable arms with tension screws? If so I bought a set of anchor straps with quick releases and like Grumpy have had my awning out in 20-25 MPH sustained side beach winds with no issue. I set the tension arms and strap them down. If there are forecasted thunderstorms I retract the awning in those situations.

This set has bungee's and goes in the track. Real easy setup and removal. ALso a set of dog stakes to hold them down works best.

This is my second trailer with electric awning. It is true that while more convenient, it is more susceptible to wind damage. I personally follow the rule that if you're not in the trailer or sitting under the awning, it gets retracted. I never leave it out overnight or while down at the beach, etc. When the trailer sits for a couple hours unattended, water/pump gets shut off, awning in, windows closed and doors locked.

On our maiden voyage with our new 24FBS a few weeks ago, the weather guessers on the radio were saying the wind was 70 kph gusting to 90 kph. I looked around the half-deserted campground and there wasn't an awning in sight. Every single one was put away, including ours.

If i'm leaving my site I bring it in, I always bring it in when I go to bed, now if you tie it down it can tear where it is attached to the camper
