Question Wireless backup camera's?

Looking into these for our new TT when it comes in. Anyone have one they really like? Is it drawing power from the TT or battery powered? Where did you get it from? I'm also wondering about wired ones. How hard is it to install one of these and get a clean look? Seems like a lot of wire and a PIA. I pondered the combo sets with the side camera's too but wonder if that is over kill. Would love input from anyone with a back up cam. Thanks

Numerous posts I've read indicate the wireless option on the back of the TT is worthless unless you spend money on a high end unit and even they pick up interference. I have about $50 invested in my eBay/Amazon wired set up with the camera above my TV hitch and it work great for hitching up. You could probably hook up a wired camera to the back of a TT....RCA extension cables a fairly cheap.

I just purchased an I-Ball backup camera from Amazon. Have not tried it yet. The camera is battery powered and mounts with a magnet, so you can move it around. I don't intend to use it while towing, only hitching up. Much depends on how you want to use it.

I have wired cams on my truck cap and back of my TT. Got them from Rear View Safety.. RVS.com. they also now have an option where I can wire a dash cam and recorder in to the system..

I started out with the wireless camera with extended range . Paid about $300 for it and was not happy at all. Only worked about 25% of the time . I then ordered some cable and hard wired it. Running the wire was very easy and the system works great. I double tow and a camera is a must have! Click image for larger version

How hard are these to wire in? Dealer won't do it the only option they offer is a wireless voyager system that is $700 then $150 to hook up the camera. I really want a camera. Called the local radio install place and they want to see the trailer before they can give me a price, they don't do wireless they say its worthless. I want the camera for backing up and to see what is behind us while we drive like a rear view mirror. I do not want to hardwire in the screen. Thanks

The one JAYCO uses on the PINNACLE is the Garmin RV 760 with the G20 camera and it worked flawlessly from Cincy to FL. I used it as a rear view camera and never lost the signal in 946 miles.

If you have any experience installing a car stereo or have basic 12v electrical skills you can install a wired camera and monitor fairly easily. If your Tundra has a touch screen NAV system in it already, see if it has a free video input, if not a stand alone TFT monitor can be purchased as well as a weather proof camera. The camera needs a 12V source to activate it. On a truck, that 12V source usually comes from the back up light wire so you'll need to run a switched or unswitched 12V power wire to the back of the TT if that is where you chose to mount it. a simple RCA cable carries the video signal from the camera to the input of the monitor.

Or you can connect it to the driving lights on the trailer and just run with the headlights on since you want it as a rear view .

I have to second the shout out for Rear View Safety.
Backup Camera System | Rear View Backup Camera | RearViewSafety.com

They have a superior product in my opinion with high end cameras and video monitors. I have not tried the wireless option but it does say that will reach 100 yards and can be synced up with your iPhone or android. If it's anything like their wired camera setup it should work well. They advertise 100 feet distance without obstacles. I guess you will have to try it out. It runs about $129.00. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

My opinion, wired is the only way to go. Had a wireless one with "300 foot range." Right! Was totally useless- intermittent, would cut out, totally frustrating. Wiring a system is not that difficult.

I agree that the wired option is the most reliable. You do it once and then it's done. This way you don't have to worry about it. That's the route that I took.

For what it is worth we ordered one from Jayco with our new unit and we still can't get it to work. It is a poor quality product. I would strongly suggest an after market one. By the way it is a wireless unit.

Rearview safety has the best reviewed wireless one I can find for a lot less than the voyager. I might give it a gamble. I'm having trouble finding someone that can install a wired one and I really have no clue how to do it.

I had one with the extended range. Put it on the back of my 31 ft designer to see the RZR behind the fiver. On our trip to Az it only worked half the time . First thing I did when I got to my destination was hard wire it in . Worked great it is now on our Pinnacle hardwired in and still working great . It is really not that hard to hard wire one in .

Called yesterday, camper is here early so I need to figure out this camera stuff. Wireless one I wanted is backordered. So I'm pondering wired. I'm reasonable handy given good directions. I love youtube video's and did my own pergo floor and many other projects watching video's as I went. I can't seem to find a video with wireless camera installation on a camper. so my question is where do you go with the wire? Up over the roof and how do you hide and secure it or down and under the camper and again how do you hide and secure it? Thanks for any help. Eyeballing a rearview safety camera with trailer quick disconnect. Just not sure where to go with the wires.

Don't get to exercised over not having the camera. If you have a spotter the camera is just a nice addition, not a necessity.
The majority of trailers under tow do not have them.
