Question 1207 - brutal awning and bike rack? Help!

Hi,

We love our 2009 1207. BUT:
1. the awning setup totally sucks and may end our marriage one day (though I think other campers find us extremely entertaining); and
2. we would like to bring our bikes camping but the trailer seems too tall to add a bike carrier on top.

Has anyone ever replaced their awning? If so, what did you choose?

Does anyone have any ideas about bike rack solutions? We would like to bring 4 bikes.

Thanks!
PS: We are towing with an SUV so there's no room in there for bikes.

Do a search for this post, What rack for 2009 Jayco 1207. There are a few good suggestions for roof bike racks for your trailer, they were posted May 2015.

We got a Sixnall rack for 5 adult sized bikes which sits atop our Jayco 1007. It attaches with winch straps and is not screwed to the roof. It was the least expensive rack we could find and it suits our needs perfectly. It's hard to find a 5 bike rack!

Putting up one of Jayco's pop-up awnings is like constructing an erector/lego set. Its quite the pain in the backside.

Thumbs up Awning

Before we bought our camper we watched a video on setting up the Jayco awning. After watching that video we told the dealer that we did not want that awning and negotiated a care free of colorado awning as part of our purchase.
In my humble opinion it's a much easier awning to put up and take down. I can actually do it by myself if I have to. Well worth the extra cost.

We have an a-frame, but bought a swagman folding hitch rack taht goes between our TV and our camper. We really like it. Now we can put a roof rack on our camper for our kayaks! Love our toys! here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=swagman+4+fold+down+hitch+rack

Just have to find your "groove" with the awning. Assuming your 1207 has a similar one to our former 1007. Took a couple of years, but it becomes second nature as you get used to it. It does help to have two people though. A few tips:

Try to remember to unzip the bag and release all but the one Velcro strip closest the step.
Once the top is up, and all are clear, let the last Velcro go - you should be able to reach it from the step.
Start with the centre pole. Walk behind the awning and place the rubber end into position.
Walk the awning out.
Place the two part riser pole onto the end of the rafter pole. Compress and pop into the hole in the front awning pole.
It should now be self standing if a bit wobbly.
Keep the leg short until you get the other two poles in place.
Last step, lift the legs to provide good clearance, runoff and level.

When breaking camp, the awning is the very last thing to be done.
Bunk ends should already be stowed.
Reverse the order of assembly.
With the awning hanging against the side of the pup, lower the roof until you can easily reach the awning's stow bag.
This is a really good time to clean any crud from the awning material.
With your partner, roll the awning carefully back up to the bag. and secure with Velcro and the zipper.

See? Easy as 21 steps.

Now attaching the outdoor room is a totally different story and a very long job. I think we used ours 3 or 4 times in 7 years.

I am so looking forward to the power awning on our new (to us) hybrid!

ETA - that May thread on the bike rack probably has the picture of mine. It's on here somewhere. Sportrack cross rails and four carriers. Not fantastic quality (I prefer Thule too) but it lasted 7 years (rough shape though by the end). Just bought a new Thule for the X19 last weekend. Will use a Stromberg or Arivika frame to mount it over the propane tanks on the A-frame. We did keep a 2 step utility step in the pup to help with getting the bikes down too. Also handy for stringing lines, tarps, checking roof, etc.

We had a Viking pup that had a Carefree of Colorado Campout awning on it. That was going to be our next upgrade to our Jayco pup, but, we traded it for a hybrid yesterday. Our Jayco awning, the best luck we had with it, was to raise the roof halfway, then set up the awning. Once the roof was up, it only took a few quick adjustments, and the awning was done as well.

Sounds like my SIL setting up with her DH. I pull up a chair sometimes to watch as it can get pretty entertaining. I only step in when it's favorable or getting out of hand. Some of us have a program and best to leave us to it.

Anyway here is what they use although this can sometimes be the same as the awning. The front tires must come off on this one.

As for the awning here are a few pointers.

Label all the poles with a sharpie and match the numbers at their connection points.

Always put the awning on before putting up the roof if you take it off between trips.

Always remember to tilt it to one corner for water run off.(they almost lost it last season)
These few little tricks seem to make it go a little smoother, but yes it is still a PITA.

Thanks for the awning advice. I have yet to get comfortable with setup. Time will tell.

I used different color nail polish to mark where the poles connect when set up.
