1995 model 1207 roof

Hello all. New to the forum.
I have a question concerning leaking roof on a 1995 1207 we just purchased. The previous owner sealed the ends and down the center of the roof with some type of rubber tape about 4 inches wide.
You can tell there was a leaking issue on this unit. The tape on the ends have a damp and soft feel to it. We were able to pull some back and noticed that the chalking was mostly old and somewhat rotted. May have been original. Also noted a couple of areas that got damaged by something hitting the roof. Like golf ball sized. One of those hits you can tell has a very small hole
My question is this. What is the best way to remove the rest of the tape (will not easily peel off) and what is recommended to repair the dents and reseal the roof?
Looks like the guy just did what he thought would work versus what is the thing to do.
I should mention that he also coated the roof with some type of rubber seal. A dealer told me that you never use that type of coating on a popup.
Help! I don't know enough to do this correctly.
Thanks

There isn't much you can do to repair dents in a fold-down roof. Dry ice maybe? Fill the small hole with silicone.

Putty tape is what we always used for the center seam and the side seams. If the old doesn't come right off you can scrape it off using a PLASTIC putty knife. Rubbing alcohol should take the residue off. When you replace it, make sure you put the screw cover (plastic on top of the metal bracket) back. This helps prevent water collecting and seeping in around the screws.

X2 what bwalton said.

Your description sounds like someone used Eternabond tape to seal it. Eternabond is excellent and is essentially a permanent repair. However if it's not done right you'll end up with what you currently have. I would redo the Eternabond tape, but make sure water isn't getting in a side seam or somewhere else before putting the new tape on. Best way to test it is to hose it down good and have someone inside to look for leaks.
