Broken Lifter Post Cable

On my 2014 Jay Series 1406, there is a cable on two of the opposing lift posts. The cables get tucked into the lift post cover when it's raised.

When we raised the roof this weekend, one of the cables wrapped around the roof latch and snapped.

I can't find any mention of this cable on the owners manual.

Does anyone know what it's for, is it important, how can I fix it?

My assumption is that those two cables signify that when they are tight, you've raised your camper enough.

You only raise the roof until that cable pulls tight, any further and you have over extended the roof and your door won't fit, canvas might rip, etc.

Mine only had one, but if broken you can probably replace with a section of aluminum aircraft cable available at your local Lowes or Home Despot. Just measure carefully when crimping in place to get the length just right.

I was cranking up my pop up and forgot the front right latch. I didn't get it up far but heard a pop and now the right side doesn't have any support. I can pull the post apart. It is in the up position now. Need to know what happened and how to fix it? Any help?

If your lifter cable broke and you are handy call Jayco for a schematic then go to Lowes or Home Depot for cable and a crimper and anything else you may need (it is cheaper then buying pre-cut and crimped cables). My husband had to replace all of ours on our first pop-up.

Ideally you would always remember to open all the latches, but there are other situations that can cause similar problems. (Trailer not fully level is one...) When you're in there, look at what you have and think about how to improve it so it doesn't happen again.

For my popup, the cables were attached with loops over hooks. The hooks would unbend under that kind of stress. I switched to u bolts and it seems to be a better repair.
