Cabinets

I have searched on the internet and seen a ton of options. What have you all done when refinishing cabinets in your pop up. Ours are wood wall paper looking stuff for lack of a better description in mind

Can I just paint them? Do I need to do something more specific. The edges are flaking. Does not look horrible yet but I'd like to make it nicer. It's a 1997

you might want to try and remove the wall paper first(for a lack of a better word) then pain them ... i stained my 87 that way
