crank ratchet

I have an issue with the crank ratchet for the pop up. The female square tube that attaches to the ratchet is getting warped out of shape. The male crank handle slips out with just about every rotation. It might not be much longer before I'm trying to crank it up with a square peg in a round hole. I have squeezed the thin metal closer to it's original shape, which helps for one or two uses, but it slowly starts to flare out quickly. I bought a piece of square tubing, but I think it's the same size as the thin metal. Any suggestions besides replacing the whole ratchet assembly?
PS. 1 of the 4 sides has a small tab sticking inward which stops the crank handle from being inserted too deep. I assume it is supposed to be there, but why?
