odor issue

I have been chasing a transient odor in my 2008 14HW Baja. I really thought it was a grey or black water issue. However, I have finally located a more precise location of the source. It appears to come from in or next to the heater. I looked into the heater area as best as I could without actually removing the heater. I could not find any evidence of water damage or mold, but there is not a lot of access to view the cavity around the heater. Any suggestions?

I really can't help, but do have questions:
Is odor around a furnace or a water heater?
How long have you had the odor problem?
Did you have a rodent problem in the unit?

I had a "dead mouse" odor a few years back and the source was a small mouse nest at the end of my floor heater duct, next to the vent-hole where heat was directed to my tank area.

Also, my BIL had a mouse nest within his Jay Feather furnace housing a fews years back that caught on fire..., long story, but the fire was extinguished in time but furnace had to be replaced.

odor problem

Well, it is definitely not mercaptan. I also do not believe it to be mice. I have experience with both of these. It smells like sewer.

How is your gray water system vented? Is it possible a defective Air Admittance Valve (an inline vent) is letting odors from the gray tank into the cabinet area?

Aav

Good question. I have no AAV anywhere in the system. The sink goes straight to a 1 1/2" ABS line to a gate valve. The shower goes through a traditional trap into a grey water tank. I have disinfected the grey water tank and sink drain line. I have cleaned everywhere I can, and the odor still exists. Anyone ever had a problem with odors being retained in the upholstery or foam in the cushions? I have wiped down the hard surfaces, so I thought of the cushions, or the inaccessible area under the tip out. This is turning into a great detective story.

Your water heater is up pretty close to the battery box. A dead/dying battery often gives off a rotten garbage smell (sulphur gas). Might check your battery state.

Years ago we had an electric hot water heater in our house and we developed a sulphur odor in our hot water. Turns out our well water had an anaerobic bacterium of some sort that reacted in some way with the water heater's anode. We replaced the heating element and it helped for a while but it came back eventually.

evasive odor

Thanks Bankr63. On my trailer, the battery is mounted outside, so there is little chance of battery off gassing. Also, I have an AGM battery, which minimizes the off gassing.

Killerisme: thanks for the suggestion. I will take a look at the water heater. I looked around the outside but did not consider what might be inside.
