Expensive lesson

After 4 days of no hot water, checking every possible valve, electronic, and switch I could find, I finally gave in and called out a repairman. He walked in, turned on the LP gas detector and charged me $180. It had gotten switched off while cleaning carpets.

I'll bite - why would an LP Gas Detector that's been turned off mean no hot water?
[ By the way, my LP Gas Detector is hard-wired, always on. And can't be turned off. ]

When the LP gas detector is turned off, or detects gas, either one, it disconnects all power to the igniter units so you can’t blow yourself up. Our detector has an on/off switch.
