Question Sink/shower grey water tank confusion

Hi everyone,

We are brand new owners of a 2012 Jayco 1206 popup with shower/bath option and I am absolutely confused about the grey water system. I have studied my owners manual, this forum and another and cannot for the life of me figure this out. I would greatly appreciate your input.

From what I understand in the owners manual, the shower and sink are supposed to drain to the grey water tank. Here's my problem: My son accidentally turned the sink on and the water would not drain until I opened the threaded drain outside the popup near the sink area. It did drain well out the side, but certainly wasn't going to drain to any type of tank. That water wasn't budging until I drained it out of the side.

So, should the sink be draining into the greywater tank or not? Per the owners manual, it should. But it doesn't, so am I missing something? Some sort of pump or switch or valve? I'm at my wits end with this.

If indeed it does not drain into the grey water tank like the shower, then how could I possibly drain both lines into the sewer connections while camping? I suppose I would be forced to drain the shower/grey water tank to the sewer using a doughnut type thing threaded to accommodate the "garden" hose, and then independently drain the sink into a bucket and dump it? I sure hope that two drain systems for grey water isn't the answer.

We have been tent campers for EVER and this is our first attempt at a travel trailer of any sort. I am incredibly confused and am very thankful for forums such as this.

Hi and welcome to the world of sleeping off of the ground. Most if not all PUs do not have grey water tanks installed. You need to get a portable tank to drain the grey water into. You can buy tanks made for grey water, or you can take a freshwater tote and use it for grey water.

Thank you for your response.

It does have a grey water tank, I've seen it... but the sink doesn't drain to it. I haven't tried to drain the shower yet, so I'm left to assume the grey water tank is for the shower only.

You have an 11 gallon gray tank for the shower only.

You need a separate portable gray tank for the kitchen sink drain.

Fresh Water Capacity (gals) includes water heater 23
Gray Waste Water Capacity (gals) with optional shower/bath 11
Black Waste Water Capacity (gals) with optional shower/bath 5

This is from Jayco's website, so you do have a gray water tank. Since it list the tank only if you have the optional shower/bath I would say it is only for the shower water. You might be able to run a drain line from the sink to the gray water tank, but the sink is on the other end and other side of the trailer. If you follow the drain line from the sink to where it exits the trailer you will know for sure if the sink is connected to the tank.

Thank you all SO MUCH for your replies. I truly appreciate it!

Thank you for clearing this up for me, I felt like I was losing my mind trying to wrap my arms around this.

I will go ahead and purchase a portable tank as mentioned above. Easy day...

Your welcome. Enjoy having your own shower and toilet. I miss having a cassette toilet. I don't have to dump as often now, but it was much easier to dump the cassette.
