when to replace Hydraulic Surge Brake assembly
we have a 2001 Jayco 12' box with front storage area pop-up that we are wondering if we need to replace just the brake pads or the whole brake assembly. My DH took the wheels etc. off and it looked like the caliper cylinder was bent in the upward direction. Is this normal? On one wheel the front pad is thinner than the back one, but on the other wheel both pads looked about the same amount of wear. Both sides seemed to have some of the springs extended, but when my DH used a hammer to gently try to move the pads into what looked like a straighter possition the brake drum would not fit back over them. The parts were rusty and did not move freely by hand. So what is normal and when do we need to replace them or is there just an adjustment needed? Is this something we can do ourselves? We are pretty handy do things ourselves like greasing bearings etc., but haven't done brakes before.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, since we plan to travel several hundred miles the first week of June and like to stop.
