I quit using the commercial chemicals years ago and I won't go back. I now use Borax, Calgon and blue Dawn dish soap. I use the cap for the Calgon as a measure and put one of each after each dump....

Then their warranty should pay for those tanks I bought. There is nothing that an anode can do to hurt the heater. The only thing inside the tank is water and the heating element.
