You CAN back up with them attached. That being said, you can turn a lot sharper backing than pulling forward. If you turn too sharp baking up you may bend or brake the bar or mounting brackets.

I read somewhere that if you have an outside shower and leave the faucets on but shut the water off at the shower head the hot and cold water will mix so it seems you don't have hot water.
