Jay Flight Swift SLX Axle

Someone has posted some info on another forum about all the jay flight swift SLX's axle and tires under or at the dry weight listed for the 184bh, and busts the 15bh as soon as you put anything on it.

I find this a bit disturbing. Can anyone weigh in on this? I have placed a deposit and awaiting for delivery of a 184bh, which way busts the axle & tires weight limit as stated in that post. I have sent them an email, and posed the question on facebook http://www.facebook.com/JaycoRVs. Im quite concerned about this since it is to be behind a minivan with my family.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Great now I am stressing out about mine as well. I have a call into the dealer to check into the tire/axel sizing. You would think that since it made it into production that they would make sure everything is ok?

Wow! This is some disconcerting news for Swift owners. I think this may be the first that any of the members here may have heard of it because the Swift is so new

I was actually delighted to hear that mini-van owners had a more spacious tt option than the less roomy Casita. Even our little Casita had 14" tires.

Thanks for bringing this info over to our Jayco specific forum. Definitely pass onto the members here all the info you can gather from Jayco/Dexter.

My dealer called me back and let me know the 184BH does have 14" tires rated at 1760#. That would fix that issue, I am not sure on the axle but I would bet it is upgraded as well.

So for the weight, seems to be beefier, but it has to be a different axle than the 145rb, which others report the GAVW of 2700lb.

For the 184bh, what is the difference between "Approx. total UVW (dry wt.): 2735" and "Approx. dry axle w/standard equipment: 2455", isnt that the same thing?

The "GVWR: 3500" bust the axle capacity "GAWR: 3000" does it not, if it was a 10% hitch weight (3500 - 10% = 3150, that is > 3000)? The tires are good for 3500, but is is ok to have everything so close with numbers? Is this normal tolerances for TT's?

I love the look/feel/size of this trailer, but I just have a minvan to tow with, which would not be to forthcoming if an issue arose on the road with the axle, vs a truck which could handle any problems in a better manor.

Sorry for all the questions, this is my first TT, and i want it to be an amazing experience with family!

Quick question, I just bought the 17z. It only has 13 inch wheels with a single axle. Will it have the same issue as the swift?

From what I see on tire web sites I don't see any 13" tires that are rated to carry your max loaded trailer weight. I would say you should contact your dealer and have them give you an explanation and breakdown showing the weights are safe/not safe.

I will crawl under my 18BH on Tuesday at pick up and have a look at the axle size. I guess depending on what I find out it could be a deal breaker. I hope not, I am sure Jayco did there homework and built it to be safe.

Just as an FYI while everyone is checking thier trailer tires for the correct ratings( I plan to do the same) those of you that have minivans may want check if they have a "spacesaver spare tire or standard tire" as I doubt that the" spacesavers" are rated to do much more than hold air.

Yep. A dedicated tow vehicle should have a full sized spare!

Makes me think of something we learned while towing our little Casita.....

Our mini-van has those "run-flat" tires. We were pretty concerned about them had we had the misfortune of them being compromised somehow. Two different tire shops said that if towing when using a "doughnut" or a compromised "run flat", slow to 45 mph (with hazard lights flashing) and head to nearest exit to get it fixed immediately. Basically though, to never tow with anything other than the correct tire on tv.

This was a great thread to start. Hope those axle/wheel issues can be resolved for everyone

I got a reply from customer service from Jayco:

"...You 184BHhas 2, 3000 pound axles, the 14" ST205/75R14C RANGE TIRES have a load
capacity of 1760 pounds each... Your unit is perfectly safe and well within specifications."

So maybe the confusion is a bit of a mix up between the 145RB, 154BH and the 184BH having different tires. Not sure, I replied to their email with some more questions.

Quick response from Jayco, im very surprised!

Interesting, I picked mine up today and my axle says it is 3500 pounds. I even called dexter axle and had them verify this from the model number.

There seems to be some conflicting info here, Jayco`s reply to Zector in his post says " your 184bh has 2, 3000 lb axles". Where waldos post suggests 1 3500 lb axle. If the GVWR of the trailer is 3500 lbs then I would say there is only one axle. Two 3000 lb axles would give you at least 6000 lbs which would be nice but not likely.....Something is not adding up here. I will say these light trailers have a small CCC to keep their weights down. And many trailers, even mine, the axle and tire rating is less then the GVWR because they assume a certain amount of tongue weight. The GVWR for my trailer is 7500 lbs but the axles are only rated a total of 7000 lbs and the tires about 7200 lbs. Personally I believe the tires and axles should carry the FULL GVWR of the trailer for a margin of error. But the reality is on many trailers they do not.

No EZ-Lube but the specs that are different from the Jayco site are, it has the 14" Multi-Mile TowMax Powerking tires and the Dexter 3500# axle. I can take a picture of the sticker on the axle if needed. I will say that it was super windy today but my pathfinder did not have a fun time pulling it. On the flats it was just fine but any type of hill the Pathy really struggled. I can't imagine it trying to pull 5500# that it is rated for. I guess a truck will be in the future. The E2 Sway WD worked great though and under breaking I could not even tell it was there.

What type of price are you seeing them listed for?

It looks like Jayco has no idea what they are selling with them saying it has 2 axles?

Put a deposit down for mine in Fargo for 9600. Great dealer to deal with so far, just waiting for the big call! Did it sway much behind your pathfinder? My TV is a sienna, and dont think there is much way to swing for a big truck just to tow around a TT. Im getting a WD and thinking about SC if it needs it. Now looking back i didn't see the 2 x 3000, i read it as it has a 3000 axle. Attention to detail on my part i guess. This is great news on the axle though, it removes a lot of my hesitation!

Fargo ND? If so the wife just flew back today from there. She is interviewing for a teaching position at the University. It did not move at all and that was with 20 and 30 winds. I will be interested to see how it does behind your sienna. My wife's van is a 09 Sedona with 3500# ration but after the lack of power with the Pathfinder I am in question how it will tow it. Now if we make it out to ND it is pretty flat so that would help for sure. My E2 system has the wd/sc built in and they can be found online for $260 shipped and the Prodigy P2 for $99 that is the way I went.

Just checked the axle on my 154bh. It says 2800 lbs capacity. The rv's specifications say 3200 lbs max. My thought is that the weight of the axle itself as well as the wheels and tires need not be counted. Also, the 10% that the tongue takes up ... does that account for the 400 pound discrepancy?

My tires are rated at 1350 each. So a 2700 pound rating is a little too far away from the advertised 3200 lb gvwr. I'm a little concerned about this

Hrmmmm they were really fast on getting back to me on the email from thier site. Fire them off one and see what they say.

I have my fingers crossed i get the 3500lb one that some are reporting for the 184bh.
