Does Anyone Cook On Something Like This?
One of our favorite local CG's has a firepit at each site that resembles the picture below. The only difference is that our firepits look to be buried in the ground so that the holes you see on the firepit below are actually an inch or two above ground level. That makes our firepit about half as high as this one.
Just curious if anyone cooks on something like this. I would NEVER cook directly on the supplied grate because it's full of rust. If so, what do you cook and how?

I've seen one of these online where it has loops on the sides where you can thread the poles of a spit...
For cooking on a grate, we have one of those tripod things that you put over the pit and hang the grate from the middle on a chain. When the grate isn't on it, it doubles as a hanger for our propane lantern. Which I don't think we've used really since our tenting days, come to think of it.

Yeah, I've cooked on a lot of those. I just cover the grate with a sheet of heavy-duty Reynolds Wrap (aluminum foil). I make the sheet long enough so I can wrap it around the ends of the grate to hold it in place. To drain any excess grease, I poke some holes in it with a fork. However, many times these fire rings aren't very level and the grease drains all by itself.

We cook on the fire ring all the time. I just give it a quick wipe and throw the meat on. I'm camping after all, I figure the heat should kill most creepy crawly's. Only live once. Lol

Let the heat sear the grill for a while. Sickest I ever got was from cooking on a dirty grill like this before burning it off.

We've found that if you have a grill brush for your weber or BBQ, just give the grate a good scrubbing. Most of the rust is just surface stuff and it comes right off, leaving a very clean grill. Then heat it up as others have said. Although the photo of the grate you've pictured doesn't appear to be adjustable, most I've seen allow the user to raise or lower the grate with respect to the fire, so you can adjust your temperature. We've made some great dinners this way. Good luck!

Yes I cook on them all the time. Steak, chicken, with potatoes wrapped in foil in the coals. Heat should kill just about anything that would be on the grill.

Our grandkids love to cook on these grates, we just cover them with foil. Most famous dish to date, a pine cone covered in a light mud sauce, presented by our 8 year old granddaughter. She is quite the chef............happy camping!

We use the fire pit as much as possible. We also bring our own lightweight rack that we use to make the cooking area larger.

My wife found one on the internet and orderd it for me at the beginning or summer. We've used it about every night while camping and sometime for breakfast.

We did a lot of cooking on fire rings just like that one only we had a old BBQ grate that we took along just to put down to cook on. And after cooking then I had a old aluminum pressure cooker that we used to heat water for doing dishes but this was befor we had a trailer and hot water

To safely use one of these you need to get it as hot as you can, take a wire brush and clean the grate, then spray or apply some cooking oil on the grate prior to cooking. As many has said before me, the heat alone will kill off anything that may have been left on the grate. The cooking oil will get super hot and will aid in sterilizing the grill.

We always cook on these. My pet peeve is some people think these are used to burn trash, paper, plastic bottles ect.....The DW says i'm OCD when I completely clean the former camper's debris left in the fire ring!!!!
Then after heating up the grill, wrap in heavy foil and spray with Pam............Couple of pics of the results YUM!!!

Fire grates are one of our main cooking "devices" Along with our dutch oven, you can make just about anything.

Tim, tell your wife there is nothing wrong with you!! We always clean the fire pit out because it usually does have too much ash built up. We've only been to one CG (Platte River, MI) that required us to clean pit before we left. It was nice that they had metal cans to dispose of them.

We always bring our own washer drum firepit that has legs so we can place in the CG provided pit but suspend our fire above and plastic, cigarette butts, etc that has built up in there. Maybe I should become a better citizen and clean out the fire pit too.
Another benefit of the washer drum is it raises the fire a couple feet so it feels like the heat radiates better. And if you get a bad batch of CG wood the smoke blows over you head while seated opposed to directly in you face.
