Heater element in Coleman AC

Has anyone ever added the heater element to their coleman ducted ac? We always take a portable electric heater with us to take the chill out of the air instead of running the furnace. Usually start the furnce before bed and then let the heater carry us through the night. Having the heat come from the AC would make it more convienient.

If anyone has, how did you wire it into the tstat? I know there is a white wire (heat) that goes to the furnace. Do I need to route another wire through the ceiling? Do you mod the chill grill to add a heat switch? Lots of questions, I know. I just thought I'd reach out and see if anyone has done this.

Thanks.

I have never seen an add-on for an existing ducted unit, but they might exist. I do have a non-Jayco non-ducted Coleman unit that has one. I think they call it a Chill Chaser because it really does not put that much heat out at all. It uses the same 20 amp circuit that goes to the AC. If you added to the ducted system, you would have to figure out how to run another set of wires to a second thermostat somewhere unless you disabled your primary heat stat. Would probably also need a different control board because I dont think there are any provisions on it for heat strips.

I have read on other sites that the heat strip is not very efficient. Most people use a small electric heater like you are doing.

I just added a "T" off the oven gas supply line and now can have a catalytic heater in the RV. This works better for me as I rarely stay in an RV park.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll just stick to the portable heater.

Seann, we bought a Kozy World catalytic heater last year. We had been using electric heaters but at 16 cents a KW the Kozy heater saved us a lot of money. The park we stay in now has 8 cent a KW power so the electric heaters will be used again. We use the Kozy heater when traveling if we boondock for a night. It is nice to have both as either is more efficient than the furnace.

Hey clutch - I have never stayed somewhere that had individual meters on camp sites so I have never worried about how much power I use with a heater - is that something common out where you are?
