2007 Toyota Tundra 4.7 V-8

Hello All,
I have a 2001 Designer 5th Wheel that is very heavy and I've been pulling it with my Tundra, but only a mile or 2. It seems to pull it ok but I'm afraid to pull it in the hills of southern Missouri. Does anybody else have any experience with a similar situation. I'm looking into a new Tundra with a 5.7 but haven't purchased it yet.
Thanks for any suggestions.

That fiver is a mighty big task for that truck. I would look at a 3500 single wheel truck minimum for that trailer. Just guessing you probably have over 2,200 Lbs of pin weight on P rated tires, and a 1/2 ton truck, quite a load. Best of luck, but I think you have to much trailer for your Toyota.

Too much RV for that truck. If you ever get in a tight situation, how do you get stopped? You may can physically pull it, but truck tow ratings are based on stopping safely and not killing yourself, your family and whomever is on the road with you. Unsafe to be on the road, flatland or hill country.

I'm quite serious, but as I said, I only pull it a mile or so at the moment. I think I'll look into a GMC Diesel 2500 HD. It's the future that I'm concerned with. I bought the truck before I bought the camper and I had the camper delivered to a storage facility in the town where we camp. 300 miles away. It would be nice if I had the ability to bring it home if I choose to do so.

I agree with other replies that the Tundra is under sized for the Designer. I had a much smaller travel trailer that I pulled with a 5.3 Silverado 1500, and it really struggled going into strong head winds or up steeper grades. And I didn't think it was a safe tow let alone the overtaxing of the pickup's drive train. The tail was definitely wagging the dog!

Yes, a 2500 diesel would be a much better match. However you will still want to make sure that the 2500 is capable of handling the pin and towing weights of the 5ver. Or consider a diesel 3500.

Good luck with your choices.

I tow a 37 ft Designer with a F350 Dually and wonder if I have enough truck. My towing capt for the truck is 15,400 lbs with a 5th wheel per Ford. The Designer goes out at 15,800 fully loaded. I would be over loaded per the weight Police. I have the Cat Scales weight slips so I know I'm under weight. The truck can tow the trailer but can the truck stop the trailer on a mountain road ???? Better Safe Than Sorry
Just my two cents!!!!

I found a Ford F450 Diesel that Im considering. Our designer is a 29 1/2 foot rear Kitchen. Surley this is enough truck. I'm guessing fully loaded the camper is about 12,000 Lbs. The truck has a GVRW of 14,500 and is already set up with a 5th wheel hitch installed. It is a 2008. Anything I should look for when I test drive it?
Thanks

Per Trailer Life - 2008 Towing guide:
http://www.trailerlife.com/images/di...wGuide0801.pdf

The 2008 F-450 is rated for 5th wheel towing as follows:
Ford F-450 Super Duty, Fifth-Wheel Towing
Vehicle Engine Tow Limit (LB)
F-450 Crew Cab 2WD 6.4L TD 20,500 (a,j)
F-450 Crew Cab 2WD 6.4L TD 24,500 (a,n)
F-450 Crew Cab 4WD 6.4L TD 20,000 (a,j)
F-450 Crew Cab 4WD 6.4L TD 24,000 (a,n)
F-450 Crew Cab 2WD 6.4L TD 18,500 (m,j)
F-450 Crew Cab 2WD 6.4L TD 19,500 (m,n)
F-450 Crew Cab 4WD 6.4L TD 18,000 (m,j)
F-450 Crew Cab 4WD 6.4L TD 19,000 (m,n)

So think you have plenty of room for that Designer. Go to page 27 and zero in on exactly the 450 you are looking at.

Silverado 2500 diesel

I bought a Silverado 2500 duramax diesel. Very nice truck with amazing towing capacity. I am very pleased and confident it will do the job. If not I will buy a new camper. Thank you everyone for your advice.
