Running Lights While Camped?
I noticed the last couple of camping trips that some people had there tt running lights on while parked when it got dark. I guess that I can understand why......ambience, soft lighting around the campsite.....I get it. What I don't get is how they are doing it. As far as I know the only way to turn on my running lights would be to plug into my tv and turn on the light switch. My other question is, are they running these lights off of 12v or somehow how converting it to run off 110?

The lights are running off the camper's 12V system. Just jumper pins 3 & 4 of the TV power cord. This connects the camper's 12 pin to the tail light pin.
Make sure you use wire large enough to carry the load.
I just saw where someone suggests using a 5 amp blade fuse. Just plug the fuse into sockets 3 & 4 on the campers TV plug.

Another thing I have seen used is a standard 12v turn signal flasher across the same pins.
It really attracts attention, maybe to much!

The plug on your Mountaineer is probably labeled... it will show you which is the 12V pin and which is the taillight pin.

I have done it before when I am somewhere really dark and the kids are off playing. Makes it easy to find their way back. It can be somewhat annoying to folks if you are too close so I dont do it very often.
As others have said - a simple 5 amp fuse stuck in the two pins works perfectly.

I always carry a flasher in my parts bin... works GREAT if you have to call emergency services at night... a trailer blinking on and off is very easy for them to see when looking for you... same as my stick house has a strobe on the front tied to the burglar alarm.

I looked at an RV show how the dealers did it and they jumped the plug with a 15amp fused wire with male crimped on ends. There is a guy that sells the plug for about $30 but that is all he has done is hidden the wire in the plug. Jump power to running lights like in the pic.

I noticed people doing this a lot too at my CG this year. I keep my trailer in storage at my site, and they tow it to my site so that its there before we arrive. So a couple of trips ago, i was sitting outside at night and noticed MY running lights were on. I was like what on earth, they have never been on before....looked all over the camper for any type of switch. never found a thing.
Then happened to find one of those fuses into those sockets. I guess they did that so there would be lights on the trailer when they pulled it, and just forgot to take it out.

I am very glad you asked this, I was just thinking about it this past weekend. So just to be clear, you connect the pins while connected to shore power? Would an external in line fuse from an auto parts store work? And what are flasher jumpers? please pardon my ignorance.

And if you do not want it to blink just insert a 5 amp fuse in the # 3 and 4 slots for continuous on.

3000 words or less. Seann that was an excellent explanation.

How do you get a regular fuse into those slots? do you have to bend it so it fits in with the contour of the plug?

You got it. Just a slight twist with some pliers.

Yeah - once you use it in there, consider it a throw away for anything else. Don't try to bend it back in shape and use it in another application. I got a box of cheap fuses from Harbor and they are perfect.

Beware, leaving the camper lights on too much will result in a lot of burnt out bulbs and the lens covers will likely get brittle from the constant heat.

Easy fix. Replace the incandescents with LEDs. Longer life, lower current draw, and less heat.
