Angry Engine Noise when Under a Load?

I have a 2006 Ford Expedition XLT with tow package pulling a Jay Flight G2, 31RKS weighing 7000#'s. Last week when coming back from the Adirondacks, I started getting a clicking noise in my engine ,---BUT only when I put a load on the engine. If it is not working to pull, the noise disappears. I just added fuel injector cleaner and changed to high test gas but haven't had a chance to tow again. I'll try this weekend after giving the gas a chance to work through. Any suggestions???

It's hard to describe noises and diagnose. It could be something simple or complex. If you're ready for an oil change you can have your oil analyzed at a place such as Blackstone labs who can determine if there's metals in the oil or excessive wear such as a bearing or lifter failure. If the analysis comes back good then you likely have a less major issue such as a ticking injector, fuel pump, spark jump, defective / loose spark plug (happened to my wife's Jeep) or such. Could even be an exhaust leak which if near an exhaust port would sound like a metallic tick as well. Easy to see on a diesel with soot, but harder with a gasser.

fayless Forget the belt etc if it's just happening under load. One thing that will make noise under load is a flex plate that is begining to crack around the bolts. A friend who was a mechanic at campers inn has seen it before & the sound was a tick under load. Larry

That would be my guess....., possibly the exhaust gasket or cracked manifold.

Is there any loss of power when it "clicks"? Something along the lines of a misfire perhaps? If it's going to miss out then it is likely to miss out at all times and not just under a load but a loss of power can be an indicator of some other culprit.

in my expediton the ticking i was getting was the exhaust manifold gaskets were going. It progressively got worse over time. the one difference is that as the engine would get warmer the noise would be slightly less.....

fayless-- Thats very true, you just might have an exhaust leak between the manifolds and the block. If want to check yourself you could have someone rev the motor up to a steady 2k to 3k rpm's , in drive, with thier foot on the brake and listen. You may also see some black marks where the manifolds meet the block that is a sign of an exhaust leak. Larry

We've had many fords (with and without the triton engines) come throught our shop with cracked manifolds. Its very common on the ford V8's. The iron they use seems to get very brittle and crystalize.

Problem fixed!!

Thank goodness for extended warranties. The manifold was cracked and a couple of bolts were broken resulting in an exhaust leak that gave me the sound of tabbit noise. A $1000 repair at no cost to me thanks to the warranty. The warranty has more than paid for itself with this being the third repair covered by it. Went to Ocean City and put 1000 miles on it and it runs fine now. I think with the weight of the Jayco 31' Jay Flight G2, RKS (7000 empty) my next truck will be a diesel.
