Electrical Help - Generator Power

Hi All. I have a 3750 watt generator that has a 120/240, 30 Amp circuit. It's a NEMA L14-30 locking type receptacle with 4 prongs on the generator end. Wiring Diagram Here. My Jayco Popup requires a 120V 30 AMP circuit. Wiring Diagram Here. I'm new to camping with the popup, but I'm assuming this receptacle is standard 'RV' connection for 30 amp campers.

Simply put, I need instruction on wiring from the 4 prong locking receptacle on the generator to the 3 prong 120v 30 amp receptacle that my Camper has. Again, my link to the pictures above have how both are wired now. I was hoping someone could point me in the correct direction with instructions on how to make a converter cable using the parts I just purchased. I already have purchased the Male NEMA L14-30 receptacle and the female 120V 30 Amp general RV receptacle hookup along with 4 foot of outdoor wire, 4 wire rated at 220 V 30 amp.

Any help or if someone is smart enough to provide a sketch/schematic penciled on a napkin for me, I'd really appreciate it.

Kind days,
Matt

Also this twist lock adapter says 120/240, 30 Amp. Does that mean I have 30 amps regardless weather I wire for 240 or 120? My thought is that if 240 comes from two of the 120 legs, that means each 120 is only good for 15 amps? If not I may have purchased the wrong generator as I need 120 at 30 amp so I can use the a/c with a few smaller current hungry devices plugged in too. Thanks in advance!

The device you're looking for does exsist!
http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/r...or-adapter.htm

My 6500w genny (for my house) has the same 4 prong twist lock receptical. However, my genny has the option (a switch) to use either 120 or 240 volts for that receptical- and it 'splits' the juice in the fashion you described- 120V=15A, 240V=30A.

The only to find out if the genny has the power you need (if the owners manual for the genny doesn't specify for that outlet), fire it up and see if you get the required juice you need to power everything in the pup.

All you do is take one hot, the neutral, and the ground. The other hot is not used for a single 120volt circuit.

Two things to look for -- check the generator rating when running 120 volts on just one leg. Some generators will only produce 1/2 the rated output on each leg - so it is possible you only have about 1800 watts available for what you are trying to do.

Second - check, check, check, double check, oh - did I say check -- all your voltages and connections before you hook up to the camper. If you are not 100% comfortable working with electricity, get help. I have read many horror stories of folks blowing up everything in their camper.

Let us know how it goes!
