Treating rubber seals

Was applying some slide seal treatment spray yesterday and got to thinking that this must be easier (and less messy) some other way.
The stuff my DW bought last season is a foamy spray and there is no way that my aim is good enough to not manage to get it everywhere. Last fall I did the outside seal, used a pole with a piece of cloth rag on the end. I'd spray some on the cloth and quickly slather the stuff onto the seal. Not sure if I got a good coating on it all or not. Did the inside yesterday and just trying to spray the end of the pole I had a few miss sprays that required some quick swabbing of the muck off of walls and furniture. Again, wonder if I got a good coating where it was intended.
What do you use and how often?

I use 303 Aerospace Protectant, once in the spring and fall.

Cosmic Debris (boy, that has to have a tale behind it). I use the same method you use. Because I have slide awnings it makes it a little challenging to get protectant on all the seal. So I treat 3-4 times during the season. Perhaps I am missing something but I have never treated the interior of the rubber. The exterior rubber receives the most abuse with sun & elements so that's all I have ever treated.
I treat with Thetford slide out rubber protectant.
Since my rubber seals sometimes don't fold all the way out when the slide comes out, I use a yard stick (edges sanded to a nice round) and slide that between the rubber and the slide. Works pretty well.

I had a spider web crack in my fiberglass. The dealer said it was from a screw that was over tightened. I never noticed it, but when it was in for warranty work, the technician noticed the crack. They called me and told me about it. They sent it out for repair. When I picked it up, I could not locate the repair at all.

Are you able to just spray it on accurately? I'd be more likely to keep after the seals if the application wasn't like painting the ceiling with a long stick and spray on paint.

That's petroleum base (Vaseline=petroleum jelly) not a good idea on rubber. It can also collect dirt.

There is an insert in our manuals regarding the slide seals and that was one of the products not to use. The list is long too!

My dealer told me that baby powder was the only thing I should ever use. Anyone know if this is true?

It must have been a hardcopy insert. I scanned through the owners manual and find no list of products. Any chance that someone has it in pdf format or a link to the same list?

I have heard and read that as well. Apparently that is similar to the product that they are treated with before being boxed and shipped to the RV manufacturers.

Yep, that's the stuff my wife picked up. Using it reminds me of shaving cream fights. The second time I went to use it the nozzle had become partially blocked so it shot the mess at about a 90 degree angle from aim. I was inside the RV when that happened.
I did the inside rubber too because I thought it would also dry out and start to breakdown over time, and it doesn't look particularly easy to replace. Besides that, my wife had a terrible cold and I was looking for chores to keep me out of the house. Found plenty.

Thetford Premium RV Slide Out Rubber Seal Conditioner # 32778.
You want to use only Non Petroleum Base Formulas seal conditioner. Petroleum base seal conditioners will cause the rubber seals to swell and can cause the slide out to stick and when it does travel you will hear squealing as the slide out travels.
The petroleum base lub will allow dust and dirt and foreign material to adhere to the rubber seals.
I use this product twice a year, at the beginning of the season and at the end.
Thetford #32778
Product Features

  • Prevents fading, cracking and deterioration
  • Long-lasting UV protection
  • Non-petroleum formula that’s tested safe (petroleum-based formulas can cause swelling, cracking or degradation of rubber seals)
  • Protective coating repels water
  • Cleans, conditions and shines
  • No wiping required
  • CFC-Free

Resurrecting this as we have many new comers to our hobby, and its something that gets overlooked by many.

Side note: I've always used 303 for my seals, though there is a sizeable camp that apparently swears by the Thetford foaming spray. Any wisdom gained from so many years since this was posted last? I just bought a gallon of 303 to refill my spray bottle.

I use 303 on my seals and most of the exterior plastic parts on my rv. Great stuff but seems to require frequent application.

I still use 303 for anything rubber or unpainted plastic. Great UV protection…
