2008 Jayco 17c Ex-port hybrid purchased used in Sep 2009. 240 nights on road, 38 states. Did several modifications, but now very laminate (foam sandwich) floor threatens use. Is DYI repair as simple as putting down a sheet of structural plywood after removing plastic flooring?

Love TT

2008 Jayco 17c Ex-port purchased Sep 2009. 240 nights, 38 states.

My wife and I just spoke about our situation which is a Camper worth about $5,000 in good shape with possibly unrepairable soft laminated floors. We like ours enough to probably spend about as much money as it is worth to keep it.

This is another thread, but features on our camper we do not think we find on 2015 campers our size:
>Ducted heat. We have ducts heating bath, kitchen and dining space. Newer campers same size do not have ducts.
>Dining table drops to make full double bed. We can, and have slept 6, one time 7 people, comfortably. "Improved" configurations turn the dining table into a single and 1/2 bed
> dry toilet rather than wet. We like a "3 am" conventional bathroom.
>3 burner stove. Tea, coffee, pancakes. Others have 2 burners.

Hitch Pin,

I note you are now a "proud owner" of a 2015, Jayco 23RB, which prompts me to make an inquiry.

After your flooring problem with a 2014, does the new 2015 23RB exhibit the same problem(s)?

I'm curious because I have an 23RB ordered and want to be alert to past problems that owners might have or had.

Regards,
Gharwali

The Jayflight has a different floor system then the ones mentioned in this thread. It is plywood over wooden floor joists so not likely you would have soft floor issues with your Jayflight. And I have not seen where Hitchpin has posted having any issues either with his new Jayflight, only the previous one with the sandwich floor construction. Buy with confidence and welcome to the forum..!

The Jayflight 23RB floor is solid as a rock. It's a very good solid trailer, you will be very happy with it.

the floor and roof system is what sold us on the Jay Flight. 5/8" plywood floor on 2 X 3 floor "joists". Roof is a truss system with wooden blocks rather than metal spacers. Screwed not stapled 3/8" roof decking. Good solid system, rather than the foam and wood sandwich floor. Enjoy your new rig !

2008 Jayco 71c. I, and others, have posted on other threads approaches to soft floor problems. One thread is "New Hybrid . .. soft floor .. is this normal?".

Based on my experience I tell people to avoid sandwich construction flooring campers of any model. If they own one and it is ok, sell or trade it.

Water is can be a problem. Another is flexing, at first very little, at pressure points like just inside the door and in front of the sink. The flexing became a discussion for us in 2014 and makes the camper unusable in 2015. Ours deteriorated quickly.

The compromises of making a 3,500 lb gross weigh camper at a $15,000 price point ($12,000 actual) for our camper meant inadequate tires and flooring material.

Go to other threads like "New Hybrid . .. soft floor .. is this normal?" to read what is being tried.

From the holes I have had to drill in the floor of my Jayco "Superlite" fifth wheel, I believe that the floor is composed of the foam sandwich construction with a 5/8" wafer board plywood on top. We have had no soft floor issues (so far). I think that the plywood distributes weight far enough out that no one spot of the sandwich is stressed too much.

I wonder if one solution for folks with soft floor issues on sandwich construction is to put a plywood layer over the sandwich. Maybe this would cure the problem?

I'm with you on this, I've been there and done that. I also tell tell people to avoid sandwich construction flooring, they are nothing but junk in my book.

How do I know if I have "sandwich" flooring? I have a 2015 octane 273. It seems like I have thicker wood on top with expanded polystyrene (crumbley white stuff like in coolers) in between and pretty thin wood underneath. Not real sure of the wood thicknesses but maybe 5/8" on top and 1/8" on bottom with some membrane underneath for waterproofing I presume.

I'm curious, Frank Rader, wasn't your 2014 TT still under warranty?

I think it was only the lightweights with the sandwich construction. Our '15 Jay Flight is also 5/8" T&G plywood, not the sandwich construction.
