Many years ago we were pulling our "train" up to Grand Teton National Park. Our "train" consists of our TV, an Eagle 215SD FW and a walk around 18 .5' boat. As we came over a hill, the boat started fishtailing and I could see it in the driver-side mirror and then the passenger-side mirror, each two or three times. I could see most of the boat each time it fishtailed so it wasn't just a minor wobble. Fortunately, we kept moving forward, the FW moved a bit in concert with the boat, but it finally settled down and straightened out. Needless to say, the rest of the trip was less than comfortable worrying about the problem happening again, but it didn't. We have been pulling double with a FW and a boat since 1993 and this is the only time it happened. Only damage was a little bending on the wiring but we were pretty shook up.

Around Feb-March of 2012 I was towing a 43ft park model westbound on I94 just east of Clearwater, MN. The highway rolls up a bit of a knoll and it is open field on both sides of the highway. The wind was blowing rather hard out of the north and as soon as I crested the knoll I could tell the wind and snow had turned the hwy to shear ice. The wind pushed the trailer far enough to the driver side that i am sure i could see the taillights on the trailer. I used the manual slide on the brake controller and the trailer came back in line. Exactly 2.3 miles down the road they had the highway closed the rest of the way west to Fago, ND. I checked in at a hotel and changed my pants....

I bought my first RV but had to pick the 5th wheel up 3 states away. Pulling a 5th wheel for the first time is scary enough but adding to it was the fact that an empty ice cooler got tangled up with my emergence trailer cable and pulled it out. This caused my trailer brakes to lock up. Blue smoke and the pull of the 5th wheel sort of freaked me out. Luckily we were on a road with a shoulder. I was able to pull over quickly and eventually figure out what happened. This happened just a couple hours after pulling out of the dealership. Seems like there should be a better connection methodology; there is just too much slack in the cable and its constantly wiggling around. I'm paranoid that it will come loose again.....but hard to resist putting a few low profile things in my truck bed while pulling the 5th wheel.

A near miss

About two months ago my wife and I were traveling to the Northern Ca. coast pulling our Jayco JF 28 RLS. While traveling on a moderate and straight downhill grade on a two lane highway at about 55 mph, we were treated to a near miss broadside collision, courtesy of a driver of a truck tractor pulling a large aggregate trailer. There was no traffic in front of us but there was a line of traffic behind us. Traveling uphill in the opposing lane was a steady flow of traffic including the semi-truck. As we approached an uncontrolled intersection I saw the semi truck pull into a left turn lane and slow down. I would estimate that I was about 500 ft. from the semi when he made his left turn across my path. I applied my brakes hard and I turned slightly to my left hoping to clear the rear of the trailer. I could not move into the opposing uphill lane as there were cars that I would hit head-on. I thank God that I was driving a 3/4 ton TV and neither my truck or trailer brakes locked-up as I slowed down. My trailer tracked straight behind me and I cleared the back of the semi trailer by about 10' half in the turn lane which he had just come out of. I heard and saw some vehicles behind me swerving and/or skidding to avoid the truck. My wife was scared to death and I was mad as hell at that reckless truck driver. I had no way of identifying or contacting the driver or the truck. I believe that God controls all things including the outcomes of dangerous situations. All we can do is drive safely and defensively at all times. I hope that semi-driver uses better judgement before turning in front of oncoming traffic.

Greenenvy1, that was good heads-up driving.

Three years ago trailering my 30 ft boat (overwide permit) I got passed by a little red Rodeo that pulled right in front of me by a few feet. Light turns yellow and she slams on brakes. I slammed on brakes as hard as I could ( thank god Good anti lock and disc brakes on trailer). I New I would not stop in time and turned into the turn lane almost losing it. I came to a stop with the Boat next to her car. I was shaking and got out screaming at her. The young thing was in tears in the front seat. If someone was in the turning lane I would of hit her and drove her thru a busy four lane divided intersection. I now drive with a camera. The smoke from trailer tires covered her car

The first summer we had the trailer we were on a desolate highway in North Dakota. Not much around. There was a loud bang and we lost most of the power in our diesel truck, I mean the pedal was to the metal and we we going 10 miles an hour.

I pulled over and it was quickly apparent what had happened, the clamp holding the turbocharger hose had blow off, and the hose was just hanging there.

I did not have a spare clamp. Fortunately, there was a town maybe 7 miles down the road with a NAPA, and we limped in. NAPA did not have a Ford clamp, but we put on two smaller clamps and got the hose nice and tight.

Now I keep a spare clamp or two, just in case.

Cheers.

I'm going to buy a dash cam this week. I almost t-boned a school bus Thursday afternoon when the bus driver blew a stop sign right in front of me. The grace of God is the only way I got stopped.

I've been considering buying one for some time, but this incident made my mind up for me. Something like that would be a lot easier to explain if there was video evidence.

I don’t need a camera or a TPMS. Sometimes bad **** finds you, it’s life.

My truck got totaled a week ago because an inexperienced 17 year old kid turned left in front of me point blank. No amount of technology can prevent that.

Not saying it’s not of value, but it’s not the ultimate solution.

Try explaining rear ending someone while towing with no witnesses or someone running a light with no witnesses. Numerous occasions u can be charged 50% at fault. Well I got the proof and will be keeping my insurance cheap and driving record accident free. Wife used hers once, two lane road car came at her in her lane side swiped her and she went off road and messed up the car. It was in my neighborhood and I found the car. She spent the night in jail and her insurance paid 100%. Good thing it was a female driver or I would of been in jail. I will take my cameras u can keep your luck
