First Snowbird Experience need advice

Looking for advice. We are experienced campers but this will be our first snowbird trip. We know we will be going thru Texas, New Mexico, Arizona. Leaving Kentucky late January and returning thru Fort Collins Colorado in Mid March. Any suggestions on must see and do and good places to stay for base camp and take day trips out of. Prefer scenery, nature, and small town life to big cities/

Thanks Ed

The Colorado River Valley has the warmest temps and lots of small towns.

Can be of some help regarding my part of Arizona (north central area); not so much with the other places (BTW, we lived in Ft.Collins for 5 years!).

We moved to Cottonwood, AZ in the Verde Valley about 6 years ago. In this area are several good places to stay (Dead Horse State Park and Thousand Trails RV Park are probably the top two) and lots of federal land in the surrounding area if you'd rather boondock/dry camp. When our youngest son is asked where he lives, he says "In Arizona in the scenery."

Lots of nearby day trip opportunities, too, in the Verde Valley:
Cottonwood has its 'Old Town' with small shops, wine tasting rooms, and restaurants.
Clarkdale has the scenic Verde Canyon railroad along the Verde River.
Camp Verde
is quaint and has Out of Africa, a wild animal park.
Sedona has its red rock views, jeep tours, up-scale shopping, and restaurants.
Jerome was a mining ghost town but has been transformed into an artist community with small shops and restaurants.

A bit further out, day trips to Flagstaff, Sunset Crater National Moment, the Grand Canyon, etc. are all possible.

Is it obvious that we really like it here?
