Antares rocket blows up at NASA Wallops

We were outside waiting and gazing to the North East for the rocket to launch and only saw a bright flash. Here is the reason, NASA said a "catastrophic anomaly" occurred:

Before launch:

Antares rocket exploded on launch.

Video of the launch:

We were flying up the east coast and saw the explosion. Heard on the radios it was a rocket. Glad to hear no one was on board!

Damn! I have seen the Shuttle lunch from Cape Canaveral and when I was a kid I saw several Saturn V Apollo Moon launches from the FEC railroad bridge which is real close to the launch pad. My dad worked for the FEC. All I can say is it was UNBELIEVABLE!!! The flames shoot out in all directions one mile from the pad and the ground trembled like it was the Apocalypse...

This rocket was supposed to deliver 5,000 lbs of supplies to the space station.

Well, that explains why we did not see it from central North Carolina as expected.

I just talked to a buddy of mine on the phone who is on the fire fighting staff there and he said the launch pad was destroyed in the explosion, and the firehouse damaged. A large piece of concrete landed near the firehouse. The marsh is on fire and he said they will be there all night. Yikes. Luckily everyone was far enough away when it exploded and no one was injured. The launch facility is about 30 miles NE of here.

We do a ton of development work for NASA at at the company I work for and I can only imagine the crap storm and investigation that blow up is going to start! I feel sorry for any company that had a hand in building it and am sure glad it wasn't us lol.

I understand this rocket used a "refurbished" Russian rocket engine.

Yes it did.
I've always had an interest in NASA and space travel. My brother in law owned a machine shop and I worked there during high school. He had several contracts with NASA. I operated a drill press and worked on thousands of small aluminum alloy parts that were used in the shuttles. The work was tedious and the tolerances were incredible. Every 5th part had to be certified to be within tolerance after each step and we are talking about thousands of parts per order. But I loved it and always thought it was so cool that something I had a small part in making was being used on the shuttle and traveling into space.

Amazing pictures Crabman thanks for sharing. I was there back in March when they scrubbed a launch and I was disappointed. Wish I lived closer to see one I bet it is amazing.
