Someone asked if I was armed, I answered as it pertains to the topic of security while stealth camping. Somehow people tried to twist what I said into something else. Bottom line is I carry legally, no matter how others try to paint or call me out.

I believe in gun ownership and concealed carry - but I concur with others ... please open a new thread for this topic (guns, security, CCW, etc.); hopefully the administrators can move the related posts to that new thread. As a gun owner, I would follow a thread with that focus, but also like this thread for entirely different reasons ~ as do many others who don't believe in gun ownership.

Funny we've been all over the place and have over nighted in waysides and truck stops. Never felt so unsafe that we felt we had to carry any kind of weapon.

The trick to this is exactly what Frommers recommends to travelers. Use your "spidey sense". If it doesn't feel right, that's because it probably isn't. The way sides in FL and GA are like that at night. Very uncomfortable. You can feel eyes on you the second you pull in. We felt like that on Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco and driving on I-80 in northern NV. Break down out there, and no one will ever see you again. A strange and desolate place. Didn't stick around Fisherman's Wharf too long, we were only there to see Alcatraz. But we've also been in NYC and Times Square at night. It was a blast and never felt the slightest bit uncomfortable.

One thing to Roy's point about motels. We found out many years ago that if you call them ahead many will let you park in their lots and get a few hours sleep. They do the same for truckers also.

Thanks for you input and what you said is an excellent point. I think I mentioned that at the beginning of this thread (at least I hope I did). If you feel uncomfortable leave. One should maintain situational awareness at all times, but especially when on the road. Don't allow yourself to go into the white zone of situation awareness. With that said, it should be noted that things can change in a second, and "spider senses" don't work too well when you're sleeping, and unless you carry a security detail or a cop in you back pocket, it's not a bad idea to be prepared with an alternative means of providing some sort of security. For some that relay on others a cell phone by your bed side maybe the answer, for others it maybe something else (big dog, bat, or something else). Again thanks for your input.

We generally don't overnight anywhere public, but on a couple of occasions we've had to get some rest.

Once was some really nasty rain while driving the NYS Thruway at 10:00PM. The lights of the service plaza were barely visible! I think I put us in a parking spot. We caught an hour's sleep while the worst of the storm passed.

Several other times (arriving well after dark) we parked on the side of the private road leading to SWMBO's property. Then moved the 1.5 miles to our camp site well after sunrise.
So, yeah, sometimes catching some zzzzz's by the side of the road or at any 'safe haven' is much safer choice than driving drowsy.

But planning on it? Not anymore for us. We've started using vacation days in order to travel and set up in daylight. Much less stress and a whole lot more enjoyment!

Too many gun posts on a camper forum. Time to lock this thread.
