There is no reason your can’t splice it as long as you use the same sized cable and make sure it’s heat shrink covered or insulated in some way so you don’t short it. The best splice is always going to be soldered to create the best conductive junction.

Well this won't address your desire to save dollars but it's also an opportunity to put in a cut off switch?
