I have never thought about it but it's possible that dumping the grey tank could pull the water out of the traps allowing odor to enter the trailer. I think I will run a little water to make sure they are full after I dump.
A couple black tank rinses keeps my Sensors working properly and I don't get the always 3/4 full.
I either boon dock or stay at a park with full hook ups so I can dump and Flush without moving my trailer. My process can take awhile, no big deal at my site, but maybe an issue if you are at a dump station.

Sorry brownie but you also have roof vents and the smell will come up through them

I never add any treatment to either grey or black tanks, it's recommended by the dealers because they hope to sell it, $$$.
I also keep all dump valves closed until it's time to dump, have you seen how many bugs are in the sewer lines? No thanks, I keep mine closed

We work kamp, so when were hooked up it is for months at a time. Even tho we are in very rustic campgrounds I have never seen bugs etc in the sewer line, let alone crawling up into your tanks. Remember every time you turn your faucet on your flushing your hose. I also have never had any order coming back into the unit. We generally empty our black tank about once every two weeks. About two days before the black dump date, we close our gray tank so it can fill after showers etc. Then I dump the black tank and flush the line with the gray water. Never had a problem and never had "devils tower". But, when we leave i do use the GEO method (google it) and put water, detergent and water softener in the black tank. Once we get to our next destination we fill and dump the black tank, it generally is only marginally dirty. One note, we always use RV TP since even septic approved TT doesn't break apart quickly without some agitation. I also NEVER use the wipe, they are the bain of campground plumbing systems, let alone your TT. I agree you can't pull the water out of the traps by draining the tank, since the tank is vented throu the roof vent. Since we live in sunny Az, when our unit is in storage we place a pan of water in the sink to add a small amount of moisture to the unit.
I could list a number of issues that come up all the time at campgrounds but wipes and wrong TT is among the top plumbing issues.

New to RVing and full timing myself. And wonder why in the world they go through all the trouble to hook up the hose, then use these ugly stands to gravity feed the system just so the hose can stay hooked up the whole time???
It takes me all of 10 seconds to pull out my house, hook it up and dump. Then I put the hose back for a few days. I PERSOANLLY don't see the need to keep it hooked up and the put all thee stands under it just so you don't have to pull the hose out.
Something I just don't understand yet

One day when the tank is almost full and it is raining you will understand.

Actually, Cheap and Norty, you both make good points. Plastic doesn't last long if constantly exposed to UV but connecting it during a downpour would be a pain in the butt.

Rain? Either way I have to go outside to pull the valve open. Wet is wet or umbrella is umbrella Don't think rain is worth the trouble. I can go at least 4 days on tanks with me and my wife not even trying to be conservative. If rain is coming, just dump the tanks and put the hose up. Then I don't have to go outside for 4 days... Again, just don't see why. Simple is for me. The less junk and toys I have to carry around the better.

My take... folks don't like handling the 'stinky slinky', so the fewer times the better. Also, each time it is stored, some of the contents do/might drip into the storage device (bumper, tube, tote, whatever). The longer it is out of the storage device, the drier (less odorous) the storage should be.

I would say leave them closed and dump when necessary ... rinse the hose and put it up ... when you get ready to leave do a final dump ... close the grey valves and using a black tank rinse hose used only for that purpose not to be used for fresh water hookup flush the black tank with the gate valve open ... rinse the sewer hose and your done... I am going to buy a 10 ft hose just for rinsing mine when I have full hookup.

Much will depend on the size of holding tanks your rig has, how many people, how you live, cook and clean up. What is right for one may not be right for the next person. I can see no downside on either leaving your rig hooked up or hooking up only when dumping. There is no right or wrong answer.

Leave them closed. Dump black first, then gray to be sure solids are out of the hose. Mine comes with a flush fitting, so after draining both, I close both valves and fill the black tank thru the flush fitting, and dump it again. And using a clear hose fitting helps to know then it's running clear.
