I always charge with the caps off. At low amps you could probably get by without taking them off, but it is safer to do so in my opinion. They can build up gas while charging and blow up with the caps on, even thought the caps are vented.

X2. I used to charge batteries a long time ago without removing the caps, unless it was a fully discharged battery. Not anymore. Once had a partially discharged one in a car, that still had enough juice to turn the engine over. Put it on low charge (2 amps) just to top it off. About an hour later, I was approx 30 feet away from the charging battery. Heard a loud pop, and plastic pieces were coming down, along with battery acid. Turns out the entire top blew off the battery, leaving only the posts and cables. Scared the you-know-what out of me. I no longer charge a battery in ANY condition with the caps on.

Another way to kill a battery is to leave the top surface dirty. Next time you pop the hood on your car take a volt meter, one of the leads on the appropriate terminal and the other to the top of the case and see what you get. With a dirty battery you will get a small amount of voltage...enough to drain the battery over a period of non-use. Next time you wash your car, run some water on the battery, dunk a dedicated brush in some soapy water and scrub the top of your battery, rinse and go on your merry way.

I am happy to report back the battery should be okay, it still has a charge of 12.84? I finally bought a multimeter and checked it today. I disconnected the battery from the trailer in October and haven't touched it since. It's been sitting on a concrete block on a concrete floor in my basement for 5 months! Wow! It's an interstate battery I'm very impressed. The water level looks fine too? Is there anything else you all recommend before I hook it up to the trailer in about a month?
