AM radio quality on irv x17z

I am wondering if I am missing something about the stereo on the 17z (irv radio/DVD unit)
I Can listen to AM radio in my truck parked right near the trailer and get really good quality radio, but if I try the exact same AM station in the x17z I just get static.... I pulled the unit out, and saw that there is a black cable hooked up to the back of the radio to the antenna port. I am guessing this cable is hooked up to the radio antenna on top of the trailer....
Should there be another antenna for AM? What gives?
It might just be the fact that the IRC unit is junk.....

Many things can interfere with AM reception. Have you tried turning everything off in the trailer except for the radio and see if it improves?

That's what I keep hearing. Jayco said they "upgraded" the entertainment systems but it seems all they did was replace crappy Jensen units with crappy iRV units. If my unit goes out, I'll probably swap in a double DIN car unit from a reputable manufacturer.

This post is right on the money. Here is what I did to test my lousy AM reception. In the Power Converter panel, switch off the breaker which supplies the 120 volts to the converter itself. Your radio is now running off the battery. When I did this, the AM reception came to life big time. The problem is the converter is generating lots of radio interference which swamps out the AM reception. Reading the owners manual for the power converter, they say if you experience radio interference, it's your problem, not theirs. Thanks a lot!

Thanks guys for the replies, I just did the same testing, and yes, the power converter is a big problem with AM....when it is off (running on 12v only) the signal is ok...plug the electrical on and the signal totally goes away....thanks again

A little more info…….our 2013 JayFlight has a WFCO brand power converter, and it generates radio interference. Our previous 2011 model JayFlight had a Progressive Dynamics brand power converter, and it DID NOT interfere with AM radio reception.

Here is a picture of the electrical noise put out by my WFCO converter. This is an oscilloscope measurement. Pure DC will show as a flat line. All those squiggles in the picture are radio noise. Quite a bit of it.

My unit had an inline noise filter on the power wire. I removed it without problems cropping up, but might help in your situation.

Yes, a line filter is the thing to do.
I have some design ideas which I intend to try this summer.
