Bottom line is both have pros and cons... neither is "better". Smooth siding was originally sold as "better" with added costs. In reality the finish material is very close in cost, but, I'm sure mfg make more $$ on smooth siding. Yes metal can dent, but twice as many (in the poll) had issues with delamination than with denting. If you look at the poll there are fewer issues with metal.
As with most things in America, it's more about "fashion" than fact. RV's are part of the fashion industry, one brand does something that is successful, every brand will do the same thing. When smooth siding was introduced it was sold as better, easier to take care of, and, worth the added $$. it was worth it to mfg, not so sure to the buyer.
As long as we, the buying public, know the pros and cons, and don't fall for the selling slogans all is good.
Happy Camping
