A/C question

Currently on our second trip in our 2013 315fbhs. We're in tx-100 degrees daily. Should the vents on the bottom of the a/c unit be open or slid shut for max cooling? I have all of the circular ducts open but am unsure what to do with the sliding vents on the bottom of the unit itself. Thanks

I leave mine open during the day when coming and going to help keep the main room cool. At night close all but one so better cooling in rooms on my 314 bhds. Hope this helps hard to keep cool here in texas with out 2 air conditioners.

Texas heat

I would think closed to distribute a/c better plus maybe a small fan at one end to push air around

Thanks for the replies. I partially closed all of them and the bedrooms at both ends feel cooler already.

We run ours closed to force more air through the duct work. We have two ac units and so far with the 108 temps the last two days it has kept our unit at 70 all day long. We do have the insulated windows.

I have two open during the day time, one at night. The vents do move air, but not nearly as much as on the unit it's self.

I have 4 duct outlets and the 3 slide vents on the unit itself. Typically all duct outlets are open and two slide vents are open. Usually the slide vent toward the dinette is closed. I never close more than two outlets/vents at a time. Restricting the air flow too much can result is the unit freezing up and blocking all air flow. I have no trouble maintaining 72 degrees inside when it's 95 degrees outside.

If we are away from the TT during the day I open the 3 slide vents on both A/C units and set the blower to high. If we are inside I will close the living area slide vents to keep them from blowing on us directly and cut down on the noise.
I feel the slide vents offer less restriction and will get more cool air into the TT. I also run the ceiling fan to better distribute the cool.

Mine are always closed. I let the ducted vents work and keep the noise down. Our bedroom has doors and its far from the unit. The ducts works great at keeping the camper evenly cooled..

We leave our dump vents open until the living area reaches a comfortable temperature, then I'll close all but one to spread the cool air throughout the trailer with the ducts. Sometimes before we go to bed, I'll close the last one to get as much air to the bedroom as possible. Our AC units work HARD down here in Texas!

Forgot to mention that we're in the planning process of installing two fans. One in the bottom bunk where it gets really stuffy, and an oscillating one in the bedroom to get a little more air movement without having it blow directly on us. I replaced the vent in the bedroom from the louvered type to a twist-adjustable dump type because DW and I kept arguing about who would get the air blowing directly on us at night... The new one disperses air pretty well, but a little of it is wasted because it blows out 360* and the vent is in the corner of the room.

Newbie, just purchased a used 2010 Grey hawk one AC when I close the main vents it does not seem like a lot of air is blowing in the back bedroom is this normal. And what should the temp be when blowing out the vent or duct work.

Thank you

Unless you close or partially close those unit vents, no air will be forced into the ducts.

Cthomsen, The purpose of those vents is to "dump" cool air into the living area to rapidly cool that area, then once the living area is cool, close them to force the air through the ducts to the rest of the 5er. Having said that, I have a 31.5FBHS and I discovered that if one camps south of the Masson-Dixion line, one needs a second AC unit installed.

X2 on that. Camp a lot in the southeast with a 36 foot fifth wheel and the second ac is a must for the bedroom and the hot natured DW!

Our a/c is a 15000btu and is keeping up well here just west of ft worth. I've kept the unit vents partially open during the day and closed them at night. Thanks for all the replies.

The AC unit cools more efficiently with the vents on the AC open and air is directed straight down. However, it is much nosier in most cases. In our Class C, I use the AC vents themselves for initially cooling, and close the bedroom door during the daytime. When the unit reaches a comfortable temp I then close the AC vents and use the ductwork to cool the unit. The ductwork is not very efficient but does ok after initial cool down. Seems like a lot of cool air is "wasted" traveling thru the ducts but that is a problem in the design I suppose.

I just got back from 4 - 98 to 100 degree days and 3 - 80 degree nights in Roaring Springs, Tx. No shade in the spot I was parked in. Had 2 teenage grandsons with me who were in and out of the 5er all day. Single a/c ran most of the time but with the aid of a 20" box fan and 2 10" personal fans, we all were comfortable during the day and very cool at night. Left all vents wide open in the main area, bedroom and bunkroom. We survived ok but my next Jayco will definitely have two units.
