Hot water heater issue

Just went for our first trip in new 2014 JayFlight Swift SLX.
We used the hot water heater and now the grill covering the heater is sooty and the trailer is scorched about one foot above the grill. Cannot remove the scorch marks!
We are leaving in a week for a longer trip.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Here are my thoughts. You stoked up the propane burner and there was a critter or insect nest in the combustion chamber and when it lit off it left a nice black smoke stain on your rig.

The stainmasters on here might have some good ideas on removing the char marks but if the metal or fiberglass surface it damaged, you might be SOL.

Take the back cover off. There is a horizontal tube that most likely the issue. Like Mcfarmall said, you have had a nest or webbing built in there over the winter. Blow out that tube with compressed air. You haven't got a good air to fuel mixture. That's most likely you problem.

Look at the main flame and see if it is a nice vigorous blue with white to yellow tips. If it's lazy and yellow it will cause sooting. As Ela stated the air entering the venturi tube is likely restricted causing a rich burn.

You may have to resort to removing the venturi tube and removing the obstruction with a long screwdriver or the like.

Suzel, have you ever resolved the issue? Same thing happened to our brand new 2015 SLX 185 BHS just now, 3rd time out camping. First two weekends all worked well and Insect cover has been on since the day we bought it.

Those covers are really only good for wasps and mud daubers. Spiders still get through and will build a web in the burner tube. They love the odor of propane.

There are many RV Water Heater maintenance videos on You Tube. Sounds scary but it's not. Properly adjustment makes it burn clean and efficient.

Thank you all for posting here. This just happened to us over memorial weekend. The Mr. Clean magic eraser did not work for me. What DID work was Simple Green Automotive Cleaner Degreaser. I just sprayed it on and wiped it off quickly with dry cloth. (I also got extra cloth, just water, and wiped off any extra cleaner, that stuff is STRONG).

Now I have to go wash the whole camper to make it match the EXTRA clean spot. I'm just especially glad I no longer have smoke stains on our camper. That looked scary!

Before I use the gas water heater we will do some service to it and watch those you tube videos.

now it's all clean! woot!

We had it checked last year and no issues were found. This year we had the same issue on our second trip (first trip was with no issues). When I cranked up the water heater the burn was not smooth and there was some smoke coming out of the vent. You could tell the flame was flickering. I let it run for couple of minutes, then turned it off and lit it up again. This time all ran smooth.

ya, it's dang bug season, they are aggressively seeking out nesting sites I guess. There is a little satisfaction in burning them all up, but not when they burn the side of my sweet little camper =(
