Thumbs up Entrance steps

Have seen some entrance steps falling apart on RV's not only Jayco's but other makes too. Here lies the problem; in the assembly they are using 5/16 aluminum rivets for the step assembly. Which is definitely a No No. Steel and aluminum doesn't agree with each other unless used with an isolator. For repair use 5/16 steel rivets or 5/16 to 1/4" bolts, washers and locknuts.

Have a safe camping trip!

Good tip. One thing I noticed at the Hershey show was that most other comparably priced trailers had soft feeling steps. I'm a big boy 6-04 240 lbs. My 1998 Nash RV has solid steps that don't flex or squeak when I step out. The Forest River and Prime Time products all flexed and made noise when I stepped on them. The JayFlight steps felt better to me.

I'll certainly keep an eye on the steps on my new JayFlight.

Yeah, I had to replace a broken rivet on my steps with a bolt. The rivets are steel in my steps, not aluminum.

In addition I use a step support under the bottom step to help eliminate the flex. Seems work good.

I had a rivet let loose on the top step of our Eagle 30.5. Went to Home Depot and got a 5/16 stainless steel bolt and lock nut. Reused the washers and spacer from the rivet, tightened everything down, works great. Using a lock nut, I don't have to worry about the bolt working loose.

I've had several of ours go and replaced with hardened steele bolts.

This is good information. Our Jayco steps are ok but our old Sunny Brook steps need a little TLC.

ada camper "Chris"
Do you have any photos of the bottom step support?
Was the support made locally or purchased.
Would be interested in your application of this bottom step support.

I have some 2x6 boards about a foot long stacked under the bottom step.

I used a small floor jack amd made a plywood platform to set the steps on, and lowered the old ones down and raise the new ones up. It was still a balancing act.

Be real careful, as the bolts can push up through the floor and ruin the floor covering. I place a heavy piece of steel over the bolt head position when putting the new steps on, so the bolt could not push up through.

I changed my steps from 2 to 3 steps.
