Newbie needs suggestions/advice

Hi there! My husband and I are shopping for a TT. We have it narrowed down to a brand new 2010 Jay Flight 26BH (they're asking $13,999), a used 2009 Jay Flight 26 BH (they're asking $12,999), or a 2004 Jay Flight 27BH (they're asking $7,499). This is our first TT. My husband had a TT growing up but this is a first for me. We like the layout w/the double bunk. We have a 6 month old, a 2 yr old, and a 14 yr old that will be vacationing with us. We've looked at the two used TT and saw no signs of leaks or moisture damage.

Any suggestions or recommendations? We were thinking about ruling out the 2004 b/c it's older and will probably require more maintenance sooner. The 2009 seems to be in very good shape but we thought why pay $12,999 for a 2009 when we can get a NEW 2010 for $1k more.

What would be a good $$ amount to offer for the used 2009?

Thanks for any help!

Try getting a quote from RVdirect to see just what a 2011 or 2012 would cost. The 2010 if new would carry a 2 yr warranty with it where the used ones would not. I got a quote on a 26BH in Summer 2009 from them (2010 model) and it was 12,800. 13 grand for the used 2009 is a bit high IMO. BTW welcome to JOF

Hello Momma to 2 and welcome to the forum.

We just purchased the 2011 Jay Flight 26BH for $13,999. When I looked around at the used trailers they either smelled funny, had most of the plastic on the roof broken, or looked like they were not taken care of very well. So , we decided to spend the extra $1,500 and get one new.

We did pay the full $13,999 however I did get a 10k WDH, 2 - 6V batteries installed, 4 year extended warranty, Prodigy P2 electronic break control installed, spare tire carrier and spare tire (not sure if that was supposed to be on it or not) mounted on rear bumper, and the seven wire plug trailer wires ran from the front to the back and hooked up at no extra charge.

I feel I got a good deal on the trailer with the extras added in.

Good luck!

.

If you plan to keep the TT for many years, get the "2010 Jay Flight 26BH (they're asking $13,999)". If keeping for 10+ years, that would only be $100 / year more. The price of 1 tank of gas (per year) difference.... Very little difference compared to the big picture.

Definitely stay away from the 2004 model. I've got a 2006 Jayco TT and it needs lots of 'proactive' maintenance. Especially its main roof and slide roof. In my region, TT roofs only last 10 years. 15 years if treated every year. And, max 20 years if stored under a solid roof during its winter storage months.

Double check with the dealer to see what options are on the 2010 that you are looking at. Make sure when you get the quote from RVdirect, you request those same options. Also, here is some member generated advice for buying a new tt... hope it helps.

And, welcome to the Jayco Owners Forum!

I did get a quote from RVdirect for a 2011. I read the buying tips on here a few days ago. This is a very helpful forum and I'm so excited to join you all! I saw that a "good deal" on a new TT is to pay 28-30% less than MSRP but what would you folks consider a "good deal" on a used TT? We are kind of leaning toward the 2009 mainly bc it's in the price range we wanted to spend.
Good to know about the life expectancy of the roof! Is there anything else specifically we should look out for on a used TT besides moisture damage, seals, weird smells, tire condition, general condition? Like anything specific that would signal a problem? Or any links to a used TT buying guide??

Thanks for all your help! We're hoping to make an offer on one on Monday so we can be all set for our maiden voyage in June! I'm so excited! I feel like a little kid!

I would go the extra $1,000 (or less) and get a trailer 3 years newer, with a 2 year warranty. (The RVDirect pricing now is for 2012's.) Then there are NO worries, and a better resale value too.

(I got a dealer to match RVDirect, and saved 30%.)

Momma to 2 thats a great question we are all very good at buying new but not so much on used but if you have an insurance agent you have a good working relationship with call him or her and ask if there was a total loss on the jayco you like what would the company cut a check for and you then have the true value of the TT your looking at.

That's a great idea. My mom works for an insurance company. Maybe she can find out what it's worth if it were a total loss. Thank you!

Rule of thumb we use is if we can get a used vehicle for low NADA price, then it may be worth it (especially if we don't have to pay to have something fixed etc).

With used, you can't always be sure what went on with the tt with the first owner. The '09 could have been originally purchased in '08 making it a little older than you thought. If they traveled many miles and didn't take care of the wheel bearings, or if they kept the refridgerator running while parked somewhere and the front/rear balance was off, didn't keep up with maintanence, etc. One thing you could do is take the vin # off of it and contact Jayco to see what warranty work was done on it (I don't know if they do this for you though).

New, like you mentioned has the 2yr warranty and you won't have to put out any money to have things fixed for at least two years, or have to replace tires for quite a while. If you are going to own your tt for many years, consider springing for the 2010.

No matter, you will be having soooo much fun soon! Definitely let us know what you wind up doing!!!

Look closely at the tires, you do not want tires that are made in China. Also, take the time to make sure all systems work like the AC, water heater, furnace, fridge, stove, water pump, etc. Do all the int & ext lites work, does the battery hold a charge, tv antenna and booster work? There's alot to check out so take your time. Good luck with your decision.

Do you have a copy of what to do during your PDI? If not, make a copy of the list before you go Pre-delivery Inspection

Momma To 2,

I agree with 'Spike99', stay away from the 2004. The 2009 model will have the EPDM rubber roofing material and not the TPO thermo plastic roofing material. All the Jayco models went back to the EPDM rubber roofing material late 2007 going forward. The TPO roofing material can be problem-matic in the event of a moisture leak.

Question; you state a new "2010 model", is this the actual "titled" model year, or is it titled as a "2011"?

IMO the 1K additional investment for the new 2010 model is the best bang for the buck. The 1K is buying you 2 year's piece of mind knowing that all warranty service material/labor repairs are under Jayco's dime. If you should decide in two years that you have out-grown the 26BH (which happens often), the 1K investment will place you in a better re-sale/trade-in value position over the used 2009 model (plus any $$ spent for repairs).

If the 2010 model is in fact titled "2011", this even sweetens the deal.

I enjoy spending other peoples money

Bob

I guess I'll be the minority. I bought my 2003 27BHS in January. I paid less than half of what you are looking at for those trailers and have money left in my pocket. I can buy a new roof, new a/c, and new appliance and still be out less than the cost of a new one. The previous owner was great about his maintenance and it is in fantastic shape. It also has a one piece rubber roof too. I'd rather have play money in my pocket than a trailer collecting dust in the driveway because I can't afford to use it.

Each situation and deal is unique. There are some well cared for reasonably priced used units out there like the one you found which are a good value.. Then there are some real clunkers as well. The buyer has to be careful with used units, especially when it comes to leaks.

Just suggesting to not dismiss the 2004 just because it is a 2004. Could be an absolute gem and leave you plenty of play money left over.
