mechanically adjusting trailer brakes

I am currently replacing the tires on our 314 and I noticed that the brake drums have two holes, one at 6 and one at 12 oclock. This makes for easy access to the star wheel adjuster . My question is, are they adjusted the same as a car or truck??? Adjust it so you can hear and feel just a slight drag and then back it off a notch?
I figured now is the time to do it since the wheels are off. Since we bought this trailer, I had to turn the brake controller all the way up in the truck in order to feel the brakes work.

Yes they are adjusted like the old cars. While jacked up you may want to pull and inspect the hubs and even repack the bearings if they have not been in a few years. Look for axle grease contamination on the shoes, that is a common cause of weak brakes.

My intention is to inspect and repack the bearings come spring. Although we're not doing a bunch of camping right now, my nights and weekends are jam packed with home renovations to get done before the babay comes. By listening and feeling, every thing seems o.k. for now in the bearing department. Of course, like the old tires, im sure on our next 100 mile trip (in october) I will have a failure and be stranded on the side of the road, and I will kick myself for not doing it now...
