Pleasted shade string repair question

I have two pleated shades with broken strings and they are just hanging. I see a repair kit on Amazon but they want like 26 bucks for it. Is this what other members have used to repair these or did you just buy the strings? I have never attempted to repair one of these yet and it looks like it could be a patience or frustration test for Crabman. Any tips appreciated.

I have one with a broken string. I have 2 that the clear plastic hold down piece broke. Those 2 were an easy fix as I was able to stretch the string, separate it, and pull the loop over the remainder of the plastic piece. To restring one looks like a royal PITA. Hopefully someone will chime in on an easy way to do it.

Crabman, check out this site. I bought string from them twice without any problems. My shades are all the same - not day and night - but they were not hard to re-string. There is lots of information on the site.

Crabman. Here is one on ebay that comes with an instructional PC disk. You can choose other colors in their store should you need them. The ones I have had go were the cheap clear plastic knobs on the bottom that needed a minor rethread from mid way on the shade then I retied to the knob.

Having to rethread one all over seems like it would be a task, but maybe there is a you tube video on it to get you started.

Good luck.

I had some broken clear plastic knobs on my shades. I replaced them with metal bobbins that hold thread on a sewing machine. I think the bobbins are more or less standard on most sewing machines. I attached the strings to the metal bobbins and they have held so far.

I bought a roll of cord that is used by concrete workers to mark their work- There are several "how to" programs out there that are easy to follow- We have done our own repairs for several years- It's not rocket science but patience is required to restring a shade- JMHO- DD

I've replaced the cord on several of my blinds, many times. One hint for you, Crabman, after you have the new cord installed and everything back in place, adjust the tension so it's just tight enough to hold the shade up. I've found that the tighter the tension, the shorter the life of the cords. Too much tension creates more friction, wearing the cord out quicker.

Good luck with the repair. The hardest part is removing and re-installing the shade from the TT wall. The actual repair part is easy.

X2. The website has all the instructions you will need. I recommend you purchase the $1.00 piece of wire to route the string. Works great and saves alot of time. They have a unique and accurate way to determine the string diameter. Look for the measuring stick and wrap a piece of the existing string around a pencil, per their instructions. WORKS!! It is easy to restring the shade. Just allow enough time. Took me about 45 minutes and a cup of coffee.

Well I got the first one done after a few choice words (no one was around but me that`s when I cuss the best), had to completely restring it. The next one should be easier now that I know kinda what I`m doing. I will make this observation, I would much rather work on something that requires a 9 1/16 wrench, or circular saw, or a crab pot then little strings, springs and bobbins and such.....

I finished up the second one. As with most things the second time around is much easier. However, there is little danger of me opening up a blind restringing shop anytime in the near future.

One trick I have used when pulling a broken string is to fuse them together with a match. Then you can gently pull the new one in with what's left of the broken string.
Working on them is cost effective at the test of your patience and religion.

I got a roll of replacement cord from Surplus City. $4.00. I have enough left to do many, many more.
