Insurance

Wonder if you folks can give some recommendations for travel trailer insurance.
Do I get it from State Farm which insures our cars or is there specific companies that insure trailers?
Thanks so much!

I'm also with State Farm and have insured our TT with them. I did an online search and got a few quotes from other insurance companies and all were $200+ more expensive. I have a separate towing/roadside assistance through AAA though.

We have Geico specialized RV insurance. it covers replacement cost and contents. It is much better than "automotive" insurance which isn't that good. Good Sam and some other companies do offer specialized RV insurance. I strongly recommend specialized RV insurance because of the nature of RVs vs. cars.

In a trailers case I don't think you can split the policies with liability coverage. Your TV and TT should be the same provider in a trailers case. Motor home would be a different deal.
Make sure you are getting a specific plan that covers your unit when detached from the TV. Some policies may be written as a rider on the TV and once you unhook you are not covered. I also have Geico and new model year replacement with a roadside assistance plan specific to the trailer and TV.

Talking insurance can be like talking motor oil in the old car crowd. Insurance is about protecting your assets and your future. Not just the physical camper in this case but your other assets too if something absolutely horrible would happen. Now I am fully covered under State Farm for all my insurance policies. Reason being is I have an umbrella policy. If I went with a specialty insurance carrier for the camper or my old car the umbrella policy would not cover those items. Now with my old car, I am paying just a little bit more than I would with a specialty insurance carrier, but I am much better covered incase of a horrible accident.

Personally, I would talk with your insurance agent, talk about options and the pros and cons of doing different options. My State Farm agent was very good and took the time to explain my coverage, exemptions, loop holes and so for. At the end of the day she did not pressure me to stay. But gave me a lot of good info to my research in looking at options.

X2 Jagiven!

I have Geico for everything. After talking with the insurance agent it just made sense to keep everything together. He's an independent agent and shopped us around for the best price/coverages.

State Farm for house, cars and RV. BTW the homeowners policy covers the contents of the RV.

When I looked into this I came down on using the auto carrier for the camper. So I've got liability, comp & collision for just over $100. RV insurers wanted hundreds. As I've had only two very small claims in over 50 years of driving, home ownership, etc., I've saved thousands by not overinsuring. Enough to swallow some loss without regret. Downside to using the auto insurance, content not included. I would have to look to my homeowners. So with my $2k deductible I really don't have content coverage. Upside, it was suggested that I cancel liability when the rig is parked, saving a bit more. I haven't done that yet with Hartford but did in the past with Safeco.

A little off topic, I recently shopped USAA and my quote for apples and apples was nearly double Hartford. I can only guess as to the reason. They look at your credit and I have mine locked with all three reporting agencies, so they didn't get a report.

I use Allied Insurance for everything. For us, in this area, we have great rates. The TT alone is $200 year, which includes comp/collision, contents and vacation liability.

Rates and coverage vary wildly between states/zip codes. I'd talk with your Agent. An umbrella liability policy isn't a bad idea either -- I carry one. We have too much to lose should someone have reason to sue us -- fixing/replacing a wrecked TT is important but no where near the highest level our concern.

Insurance

I used State Farm for years, but found out any of the contents, other than factory installed, was covered by State Farm homeowners policy and subject to its deductible, $1,000. I changed to Good Sam and saved some $ and you also receive a credit for not towing the trailer while it is in winter storage, about $9.00 per month. Ready your policy and read the fine print! So far I am satisfied with Good Sam, however not a their claim experience. Insuring a 2010 Eagle 34' trailer.
