Just remember, "it's no big deal". I have been towing big trailers all my life. At the end of September, I put a big oel crease on the trailer. We pulled up in the dark, and I missed a juniper bush when taking inventory. It's not pretty, and we'll get it fixed eventually.

I don't know how many have this problem, but it was a hard one to cure. Keeping the copilots head out of the mirror. For a long time the DW felt she also needed to see what was going on behind us and would bend forward so she could see out of the mirror, most often at the exact time I needed it.
I mentioned it too her politely a couple of times to no avail. eventually I had to get sharp with her and she now is good about staying back.

I agree that a large parking lot may be the way to get a little used to it. Don't be shy about asking questions from the dealer. They can be a great resource and may be able to take you on a test ride. The biggest thing that I had to learn is go slow, there is a lot more weight that takes more distance to stop.

A longer trailer is much easier to reverse than a short popup or utility trailer!

It will only get easier from the first trip! And don't worry if backing up your TT is difficult, this will get easier the more you do it.
I've been towing my TT's for 15 years now, and I still brain fart sometimes and turn the wrong way. Slow and easy is my best advice.
Great job and even better camping!

The one thing that bothers me is when you get to the CG and you're backing in to a difficult or tight spot. The other guys or campers are all sitting around watching your every move...... Nerve Wracking!

You know, that used to bother me too. But now, I just figure they want to see how a "Pro" does it. It's all in the attitude.

Yeah nobody like an audience when backing in! Does not bother me anymore though, just take my time and get it right...

Backing isn't really that hard. Find an empty parking lot, like Costco in off hours, and pretend you're striving for Carnegie Hall! It's almost inevitable that you'll get in a situation where you've got to back up on a curve or tight corner. Not a good time to learn how.

I figure I'll get the backing up thing sooner or later, just so long as I have enough room. what I worry about more is trailer sway (you know, when you see that 18 wheeler barreling past on your left). I just ordered a Jay Flight 198rd. I have an Equalizer hitch. Should I be worried?

I don't know what you're going to pull it with. For best results, be sure that the hitch is setup properly. A good dealer will do this for you. If you're within your tow vehicle's ratings, you should be fine.

Worried? not at all with that hitch. I'm pulling a 5,000 lb. TT behind my VW Touareg and it's as steady as a rock and 18s go by me all the time.

If you grew up on a farm like I did, backing up isn't so bad! A trailer is easy to back up compared to a four wheeled wagon where the front wheels turn with the hitch! That is a pain in rear to back up! The biggest pain that I encounter is the fact that I cannot effectively see everything via the rear view mirrors and require somebody to guide my 35' trailer into position.

Has anybody ever looked into a driving school when you are new to trailer towing and are unsure if the process of driving and backing? Driving schools here offer this service, I am sure it would be well worth it to gain confidence in towing. We also require an endorsement on your regular drivers license for trailers over 10,000 lb GVW in BC. I don't know if the dealers make you aware of this or not because they will let you drive the trailer off the lot without the endorsement.

When we bought my new truck, got the tow mirrors, what a difference. I still have a spotter, but feel much better that I am "less blind" when backing up!

I was the most worried about backing up my 32BHDS - it turns out, that was the easiest part for me...as long as you have a good spotter!

Pulling ours through the Colorado mountains with our Equal-i-zer hitch was great. Didn't have any sway, even with big rigs going by. Great WD hitch, IMHO.
