Question New to Diesel and have Maintenance Questions

I just purchased a new 2011 Silverado with a Duramax 6.6 Turbo diesel in it. I am towing a Jay Flight G2, 31RKS TT and the one time I have pulled it this fall (into storage) it pulled like a dream compared to my gaser. WHAT is required for maintenance??? I know about the oil, but then someone said something about a water seperator, and exhaust fluid?? Can some of you "diesel veterans" help me out with some good advise? I will ask the dealer, however, I think they will start seeing dollar signs if I do.

Best bet might be to check the Chevy owners which you can probably get online if you don;t have one. I know that Fords need a water treatment, don't know about the GM'S. Larry

Yuup, your service chart in the owners manual is your best source of information.

My Ford requires the Urea aka DEF Fluid as part of emissions compliance. I am pretty sure Chevy doesn't require it in their trucks. You can tell by oopening up the fuel filler door and if the there are 2 fill spots, 1 will be black for the diesel and the other will be green for the DEF fluid. Just change the oil as required and replace the fuel filter almost as often, I change mine approx. 7500 - 8500 miles for the fuel filter as you never know what you'll get in the fuel. Also, 99.9% of all gas stations will put anti gel in the diesel tanks already for this part of the country. (North) There are other anti gelling solutions you can put into your fuel tank as well. That is depending on how cold it gets in your area.

Chevy/GMC does use the DEF in their newer trucks. It is a tank under the hood. That is where my friends's is on his truck. Dodge doesn't require it currently, however, I was told from the Dodge dealer that the Feds are going to mandate DEF in all light duty diesel engines, starting in 2013. My truck is a 04.5, so it will run without the DEF.

Safe travels,

What keeps Def from freezing in the great white north? In Minnesota we can get to -20 to -40 below F.

NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!! When it freezes and trys to cycle for regen mode everything kind of slows down. It will keep trying to regen until it gets the DEF. Eventually it will thaw and cycle.

Darn EPA with all their new requirments. All it does is reduce mpg, making us buy more fuel and burn more fuel. This is also why the new dodges dont come with the 5.9L anymore.

Here is where you learn and ask questions about Chevy diesels..
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/

Biggest thing most need to learn about driving a diesel is to let it idle for 2 min before shutting off.. this allows the turbo to cool off and then the lubricating oil will not "coke" on the turbo shaft and cause a failure..

Seann45, I had a 2003 Duramax we bought in 2002 and put over 103,000 miles on it before trading it in. Never once let the engine idle for 2-3 minutes to cool the turbo off and never had a problem. I then bought a 2011 Dodge with no DEF requirement and the mileage, even with the six-speed manual and 3.42 gearing, was getting worse as it got mileage put on it. Bought a new GMC D/A combo and drove it on the highway all by itself yesterday and, according to the DIC, got 19.5 over about 165 miles of highway at 70 mph. Only have a little over 3,500 miles on it, can't wait until it gets broken in. I think the consensus is that vehicles with the DEF system get a little bit better mileage than do the Dodges without the DEF.

How did you get a Dodge diesel with 3:42 gears?

Dodge is getting DEF next year. http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...st_look/?ti=v2

Also rumors of a smaller Diesel being available in the 1/2 ton trucks. That would be nice!

The only time I would even bother letting my Duramax idle for two minutes before shutting down would be if I was pulling a major hill with my heavy 5th wheel in tow in the hot summer time and pulled into a rest area while still pulling hard. By the time you pull off of whatever road you are on and get to a parking place you have been idling or at very low power for plenty of time for the turbo to spool down. Yes it is still turning, but not at max speed.

All I do for diesel maintenance is oil changes every 5,000 miles including filter (I know my computer says it doesn't need changing that frequently, but oil is cheaper than an engine), fuel filter very 10,000 miles (computer says it isn't needed either, but filters are cheaper than an engine or injectors). The air filter is changed when needed.

Other than that I just drive and enjoy the power.

I am with Ed on the Oil and Fuel Filter change frequency, agree early oil changes are much cheaper than a Diesel Engine.
Also I do not let mine cool down either when I stop unless it has been under a heavy load just prior to stopping.

Safe travels,
DEF tank underhood and dont wait until you have to get it at a convience store, mucho denero.I run mine until "oil change light "comes on usually right at 10K miles, oil & filter
changed with Rotella synthetic, fuel filter will need a change 20/25K miles, transmission filter 25K(theres an external & internal),clean the fuel cooler near the tank under the truck from time to time especially if a lot of dirt roads.Air filter when guage shows to and only use a DELCO cause it flows the best of any OEM style filter on a GM ,some test results on Duramax.com show this, really not much different than a gasser.

IF you trade at 103,000 you are just passing on the problem and not knowing it... if you want a real education get a pyro gauge and see what your temp is when you pull over...
If you check the diesel forums you will see they all say let it cool down first...
I hope to keep my Dmax for at least 500,000 miles.

As previously posted, check out dieselplace.com. My '11 was my first diesel and I learned a ton on that site. Everyone will give you different advice about maintenance, the only consistent advice that everyone will agree on is to get your fuel from a reputable source that sells plenty of it.
