arctic/polar package info needed

We are a family of four considering a 30.5BHS (bunkhouse 5th wheel) for full timing use (a year of cross country travel). We also plan to do winter camping after the year is up (we live in Colorado and it gets cold in the mountians!) We would love any info from the forum members about the polar/arctic option...what do ya'll think?

I wouldn't consider not having it. No problems here with staying warm and no condensation anywhere. The dual pane windows are great also. So far I have seen 13 degrees F. No problems.

Welcome to the Jayco Owners Forum ColoradoFamily! Wow, a year on the road with family... that's gonna make for some neat memories! We don't have the polar pkg, so can't comment on it, but let us know if you get the 5'er

The Polar Package has benn tested at a continuous 0 degrees F. Jayco will not publish it, but Engineering told us -10 for long periods of time shouldn't be a problem either. The dual pane windows are a must!

Welcome to the forums.

Does the 28.5 Eagle Super Lite have the polar option available?

Actual Polar Package is only an option in the Eagle & Pinnacle Models, not the Eagle SL. However, the SL has R9 Floor, R7 Walls and R22 Roof with the Thermal Pane window option. It comes standard with the enclosed and heated underbelly.

The R-22 roof insulation included with the thermal pane glass option is a great improvement over the standard R-7 in the Eagle Super Lite; that increased insulation and the thermal panes should make quite a bit of difference in comfort, especially in Texas when it's 104 degrees and no shade!

2011 Jayco 365 BHS Winter Test

Just got back from Western Ne and in a 2 week period we got to 22 for a high!. Worst low was -27. You have to do your homework when camping to such extremes. Get 2 extra propane tanks so you can swap-out quickly. Invest in a heated hose and WRAP that hose. Last, run an extra heater in storage area. By doing all of this we only missed having water for 4 days. Nothing froze and riding out a Neb whiteout snow storm was a true adventure. The Jayco has its limits but I was impressed with how solid the unit is built for colder weather. Wind chills will be your worst issue to deal with. Have fun camping!!!

When it gets below freezing I just make sure my fresh water tank is full and pull in the hose. I can always hook it back up to fill the tank, but a full tank, 87 gallons, will last me a while and by then it hopefully warms back a bit.

Frozen in Texas

We've been in Texas the past 4 months (Oct-Jan) living in our Jayco Eagle with the Polar package. The lowest temperature has been 4 degrees and an average high of 30 in Dec and Jan. We have had problems with the black, grey 1, and the fresh water tanks freezing despite our keeping temps inside the trailer around 68 degrees and higher. We have also kept an extra electric heater in the basement that runs constantly. We finally had to build an insulation skirt to allow us to thaw out the tanks in order to drain them. The electric hose does work well, otherwise, we would have been without water for the last 2 months. We've also had trouble with our refrigerator thawing when the temps stay in the 20's. We've come to not trust our Polar Package in freezing temps. A little disappointed.

Absorbtion refrigerators rely on heat to function. If they get too cold the ammonia liquid will turn to slush and not circulate. Also JAYCO advertises that it was tested at 0 degrees for 8 hours not extended low temp situations.

They make an electric Cold Weather heater kit for some refrigerators to keep the refrigerant warm, some come with pre installed. I have read on this forum where people have partial blocked the refrigerator Vents or added a light bulb to help. As Grumpy noted they don't work if the refrigerant gets really cold.

I'm treading on thin ice here, I don't have my trailer yet and haven't tried being in one in the kind of cold you are talking about (highs of 30* lows almost 0*) for weeks at a time. I'd be surprised if most trailers with a polar package would handle temps that low very well.

Also, are your tanks in the basement? If not, heating the basement may not help very much.

JMHO, not experience.

Dtito! Cheap to include on your new RV and will help in several ways already discussed. As for longer exposure to sub zero temps, you are good to go if you just winterize the plumbing. With shore power and a couple good ceramic heaters you can stay warm in zero temps without too much trouble. You will need to do something to deal with humity.

Any additional insulation offered is worth the price. Incidentally, an Arctic Fox salesman just assured me and my neighbor a few days ago that their rigs are good to -30F. He didn't say for how long. You gotta love those guys.

Ask him to put that in writing and have the company owner initial it...
