Full site hookups

We have always camped at locations that didn't have sewer hookups. Always had to dump on the way out. We are going to a site this weekend with full sewer. So my question is this.

When you setup at a full site, do you just leave both valves open all the time? Or What?

I am aware of keeping the hoses clean by flushing with the gray after draining the black, but with a full hookup I am not quite sure the best way to proceed.

No - you want to keep the valves closed and only open/dump when approaching full or ready to leave.

The extra volume of stuff in the tanks helps to flush it out, versus stuff just dropping and sitting on the bottom of the tank

Then dump black tank first, followed by grey(s)

Depends. We sometimes leave the gray valves open, if we are going to be in one spot for a week or so. Then you don't have to worry about having to dump shower water in the middle of a shower. We just always make sure we close them in time to have a mostly full gray water to flush the black tank. Never Ever leave the black water tank valve open. You want as much water in there to flush the tank as clean as possible.

Yep, at a full hook up site, I will leave the black water valve closed (I actually drain it only when needed, or if the camper is going to sit vacant more than a few weeks in the summer time) and keep the gray water open. If you leave the black water open, you will get sewer smells from the campgrounds system in the camper because the toilet does not have a trap, and as others said, you will leave solids in the tank. The gray water pipes should all have traps in your camper so you will not get smells unless the traps dry up.

I prefer to dump the grey every two or three days. You get solids and grease in the grey tank and the volume will help keep some of it in suspension and helps to flush it out. You don't want the solids to just build up on the bottom of your tank.

This is the way I do it. Usually just before the last shower we close the grey tank and and let it fill up enough to clean every thing that it can clean after the black tank dump.
One thing to remember. Don't try to dump the black tank unless it is at least 3/4 full. Even if you have to run water into the tank. If you do so you may pull the black tank handle and nothing will happen because there is no pressure pushing it out, then you will become alarmed and think of the nasty job you have fixing a valve or unplugging the black tank, etc. Don't ask why I know this.

Never ever ever leave the black valve open.. there is not enough water flow to chase the solids out of your tank.. so the liquids will drain away and you will end up with a mountain of solids under the toilet.

My 2014 Eagle has separate drain openings. This necessitates moving the drain hose from one to the other to dump both tanks. Too me this seems like a disadvantage. It does have a hose flush port for the black tank. Any ideas on this new wrinkle?

Buy a second drain hose.....don't think you will want to try to pipe the two to a single outlet...

Thanks for the reply, Lifespalette. Do many campsite have 2 sewer connections/site? I curious as to why Jayco went with the design with two separate drains for the two tanks.

Get one of these and some hose and you should be good for most configurations.

I think you missed my point as to why Jayco used this design. The trailers I have had in the past essentially had this built in. Surely Jayco had more in mind then simply require me to buy an extra hose and "Y" adapter! Regards for answering.

You can connect the sewer lines with a "Y" connector. You'll need more hoses, but it can be done.

I know this sounds funny, but I will often scoop the dish water into the toilet. Not a difficult thing in our 197. I use an ice cream tub, one of the rectangular shaped ones. Helps with black water volume and saves pumping water into the toilet if you aren't on city water.

Many campgrounds have two sewer inputs and they could certainly be used if needed. I think they are mostly to accommodate the different evolving types of campers.
I believe with many floor plans make it difficult or expensive to pipe the distant drains internally so the easy way out is to have them in different locations on the floor plan. Not to convenient for the user. I see a lot of them lately with a external Y connecting them together.

They make a "Y" to connect two hoses together.

I think its mostly so you can either back in or pull in. When we were on lake Ontario the bigger RVs pulled in to see the sunsets and water view out the front window and we backed it to see a view out our back windows. Nice to have a choice. I have never seen them anyplace else though.
