Searching for Bumper Mount Cargo Rack

I'm searching for a bumper mount cargo rack, guesstimated at 20-24"X 4-5 feet. My 5th has a 2" receiver with additional metal bracing welded into place. For travel only, my idea is to mount my propane fueled fireplace, estimated at 50 pounds, my Baby Weber propane grill at 10 Pounds, and the two 20# propane bottles on it, so maybe 100 pounds Estimated weight. I also have a spare tire mounted on the bumper and that may create a clearance issue. With my prior bumper pull this wasn't an issue as everything easily fit in the truck bed.

Everything I see online looks like little - or less - cross bracing and so I'm afraid it'd flex and eventually self-destruct from the road vibrations. Any recommendations?

Also, is it OK to carry propane that way? Of course all cargo would be secured so as to not jump off.

Another question, would reflectors be OK or need I put lights on it?

Thank you.

No cargo rack opinions or recommendations? Very interesting.

Should I ask this question in another forum (or site)?

OK, I'll give it an opinion. I don't know if they will fit the bill, but Harbor Freight has some receiver hitch racks that might fit the requirements.

Common sense tells me that if your cargo interferes with seeing your tail lights you would need lights on the rack. The rack extending a couple feet to the rear shouldn't matter as long as the lights aren't obstructed.

I don't know the law, but I wouldn't want to haul a propane bottle back there to be the first thing hit if someone runs into you.

Thank you for the reply.

I'm looking for a strong rack and unfortunately, most everything I've purchased from Harbor Freight has disappointed - so I hadn't considered them.
I won't be blocking the tail-lights so felt additional lights shouldn't be required, but didn't know the laws.
I also figured there'd be some prohibition against storing propane back there. But hey, back there puts it away from me - that's a good thing.

I loaded things up yesterday, pulling out later this morning. Propane is in the bed. Fireplace being left behind - until I find a decent rack to carry it.

Again, thanks for some input.

I had one from H F that I used to carry a "Cricket"(mini golf cart) and it worked fine. Also just do a search on Amazon.

I bought a 500 pound capacity receiver rack from Northern tool. I loaded my 10 horsepower outboard motor on it, total weight about 150 pounds. I weigh just over 200 pounds and I bounced on the hitch with the motor to make sure it would not fail. Abount 3 miles from the house a car passed me honking and pointing to the back of my 40 foot Pinnacle. The hitch failed and the $1200.00 motor had been dragging on the pavement for about a mile. I guess the torque at the end of the 40 foot fifth wheel exceeded 500 pounds. No more rack for me. I will look for a decent bike rack instead.

Finally just decided on one

I fretted over getting a strong rack but without seeing them (nor any specific recommendations) I finally just ordered one. Coincidentally once I decided on one I found I could get it at my WallyWorld.

I'm hoping its a good one and that I won't find it dragging behind my trailer one day.

I installed the above mentioned SportRack today, pretty simple assembly. I mistakenly assumed its stated weight (of 67 pounds) was a mistake. No, this thing is heavy - made with substantial steel. I do think it'll be strong enough for the shaking it'll suffer going down the highway.

And it was very well packaged - complete with all needed bolts, washers, fasteners.

I did have to remove the spare tire and rack, I was hoping I could work around it by simple moving it more outward. The tire and rack now reside in the hold. Optionally I could have used a hitch extension but I didn't want to add any additional leverage to it.

Once assembled I did have to slightly file the inside holes so the rack could be pinned in the upright position. It was close (32nd inch?) but no joy.

Too dark for pics - but maybe tomorrow, weather permitting.

So here are the pics

First pic in the down for travel position. Second pic up and out of the way. The third and forth pic may be standard for these things but I was impressed that the locking pin had a ring to assist in fishing it out and the other pin was tethered with metal braid.

Another nice touch is that rather than using the typical pin to attach it to the receiver, it actually bolts up (15/16") tight. No rattles or jiggles. Once again, this may be standard but I found these things thoughtful.

I just noticed, in the final picture it defies gravity as the pin hangs to the side.

Very nice addition! Just as an FYI on the spare tire...I cleaned it up, put the cover back on and placed it under the bed. We don't use that storage for much anyhow and I'm hoping the tire will stay under there for a long time (no flats, please!)

Wrascal, thanks for posting this. Looks really nice! I am still trying to decide what I want to do with this same problem that I have. Pretty sure I am going to go ahead and have a custom receiver installed and go with a rack like this.

This could be mistaken but I found references to having two receivers mounted on the bumper and then using a cargo hitch that matches it with two male plugs. I don't know if any of this actually exists (or was a custom job) but I'd feel better if I had this option.

There's just too much at stake with our litigious society and occasional expensive cargo (see dragged motor, several earlier posts).

Even with my extra bracing/welding I feel that the actual receiver to camper connection is my weak point. I'll make sure and keep its' loaded weight in check.

That motion is the main reason I'm not a fan of hitch receiver cargo racks. There's a lot of extra space around a ball mount to allow it to slide easily and it allows a lot of twisting motion in the receiver tube (not an issue when towing)

Some racks I've seen have a captured nut inside the mount tube and you secure it with a bolt instead of a pin. This holds the mount tube securely to one side of the receiver tube, minimizing rotation.

If yours doesn't have this feature I'd look to add it.

And my answer is YES ...

Hey Grumpy, I have been looking at the "cricket" golf cart. Did you say that you own or owned one. What did you think of it ?
