Shore power cable connection using existing entry point

I decided that I was tired of messing around with a shore power cable that tended to get tangled inside the storage box (which is to small for the shore power cable) when trying to pull it out or push it in. I also did not want to make another hole in the TT for the new cable connector, so I used the existing access point for the shore cable.

So here is my project, picture by picture. Hope this helps anyone wanting to do the same! The only difference between my conversion and a normal one is that I connected the TT control panel cable to a male 30 Amp plug which I plug into either a shore power outlet or the TT's inverter outlet. I will be mounting my outlets on the back wall and removing the old cable box.

Very Nice Mod - I found the triangular shaped tabs on the old access sleeves always break off and its a PITA feeding that 30A cord through that small access hole (my knuckles always got scraped!!).

Fortunately, my new TT came with a detachable 50A shore power cord so I'm not fighting the shore power cord anymore :-)

On my 'to do' list. Did your modification fit into the existing hole where the 'mouse hole door' was or did you need to enlarge/fill in the existing cutout to make the mod work?

Nice clean work. Saw a unit driving the other way across the divider with about 10ft of his cord out and bouncing down the road last month. It was too late. Having one that disconects has numerous advantages.

My mod in this area will do something similar to what you did getting rid of my PULL OUT 30AMP Shore Power Cable.

I will do something like this with my new 30AMP service cable.


The 15AMP 120VAC outlet to the right connects to my 1500WATT Inverter 120VAC output. This will be my poor man's transfer switch function. Just plug in the 1500WATT Inverter output using a short cable adapter like shown... All you will see on the outside of the POPUP trailer is the MALE 30AMP Shore Power flip lid and the 15AMP FEMALE 1500WATT Inverter flip lid just inches away from it...

I made no changes to the existing hole. I just trimmed the plastic sleeve on the inside, and remounted it (caulking the outside again). I cut the door off the new receptacle (from camping world), drilled 4 holes in an electrical box 4x4 mounting plate that had a hole in it for mounting a 30 amp RV outlet (Lowes), mounted the modified receptacle to the 4x4 plate and mounted that to the back of the area around the hole with the plastic sleeve. Caulked the inside of the hole from the outside.. it rained hard a few times and no leaks :-)

Took about 3 hours to accomplish and I am very happy with the finished product. The pictures (album) give a better idea of what was involved... I probably should have done a video.

IN my case the existing access door is much larger than the provided Shore Power Cable replacement kits. This would not cover the existing screw hole pattern so I will have to make my own adaptor plate. I think my back plate will be large enought to be able to cut a new pattern in it to use the available show power kits...

I like the idea of having a removable shore power cable that can be stored in a safe location when not being used. ...

Mounting my FLIP LID 120VAC receptacle connector (LOWES) to my 1500WATT INVERTER output receptacle next to this installation will allow me to use a short ADAPTER cable to plug my shore power receptacle to the output of my installed 1500WATT INVERTER. Another good reason to have a receptacle for the shore power cable verses the long pull out cable.


Right now i am using a RV30A-15A ADAPTER (WALMART) to plug my pull-out shore power cable into the 120VAC 1500WATT inverter receptacle panel.
