To cover or not to cover

My brother in law just got a new jayco popup as his 9 year old daughters make a wish for having cancer. We were over visiting today and he asked me if he should have it covered or not. I was told that my jay flight 27bh doesnt need to be because it has a rubber roof. His pop up obviously doesn't have a rubber roof so what should I tell him to do?

When we had a pop-up in the early 90's, we owned it about three years and never covered it. However, we live in a mild climate. Hope you neice is doing well.

Its a matter of preference. We also had popups in the 90's living in the Midwest and never covered it. In the winter we would cover any vents with plastic wrap to keep the pop-up airtight and keep insects or other visitors out.

Thanks for the responses. I will let him know. We live in south east pennsylvania so we get a wide variety of weather.

We have a 2010 1206 popup and live in central MA; we were advised by our dealer NOT to cover it, as that would lead to more places for pests to nest. We've just had our worst winter in years (close to 4 feet of snow on top of the roof of the camper for nearly two months!), and it did fine. The only damage was a few decals coming off the sides. I do like rolling condo's idea of covering the vents, though - I think I'll try that when we winterize this fall.

Thank you Blumoon. I will pass the info onto my brother in law. I am not jealous of all that snow you got. We had several near misses this year with big storms but never got more than 8 inches at a time.

I covered all my pup's and my 19h. If nothing else they keep they roof's clean. Never had any " pest" problem's. We live in southern NH.On the pup's I used 1 of the blue tarps and covered the whole thing with an offical cover that had straps to hold it on.

Our pup was never covered before we owned it- and it showed. Other than some minor hail damage, the roof was fine. A good handwash cleaned er' up real nice. However, the a/c unit and the furnace vents had been occupied by wasps. That took some effort to clean up.
I too like the idea of wrapping/securing the 'vents' and related pass-throughs that could cause trouble.

tell him to save his $$$ for camping trips .. those covers are a rip off...

I cover my 35' TT, so I would definitely cover a pop up because it would be so easy to do. The cover won't cost much either since it's really not very big. The trailer will stay looking nicer, longer with a cover on it.

Was advised at one point not to cover our Tent Trailer over winter when we lived in Ottawa (lots of snow and cold) - was told that the cover will hold-in moisture, causing mold. Makes sense that the trailer needs to "breathe" as much as possible. I kept the roof clear of snow whenever I shoveled the drive (daily, pretty much) and opened it up in the spring as soon as I was able to air it out. If I lived in a drier area (such as TexasA&M) and my concern was only dust, dirt & bugs, I'd probably cover it as well to keep things looking good. Good luck.

I had a hard top for three years nad covered it every year. I also covered the furnace vents with tape to keep bugs out. It does help keep the sun from aging the seals.
