I have a 4x4 but I spend a lot of time on unimproved roads hunting and fishing. I also like it because on snowy or ice covered roads, and can put it in 4x4 and my traction improves significantly. From sliding all over to a drivable and manageable vehicle. But I also don't add any weight to my bed. 4x4 would be easier to sell and you will get more value out of it. If resale is a consideration, blue book it both ways.

4x4....better resale and if you need it..it's there. We were in a national forest camp. Leaving the next morn. Came a big rain...had to use 4x4 to get out.

No one has metioned the day trips away from the campsites (one of the many reasons to RV).
Nearly all roads in national and state forest are graded dirt/gravel and most marked scenic areas are usually suitable for a family sedan or van. HOWEVER, an unloaded 2wd pickup can get squirely when driving on dirt roads.

I would never take my $50K pickup back country 4 wheel'n, but I frequently use 4wd on dry dirt roads - just to maintain better control. (and yes, I have limited slip differential in the rear).

I live in a northern state and you see very few 2wd pickups even stocked by dealers up here. In the winter when the snow flies, if you have 4wd you will not have to chainup except under the most severe conditions. That saves a lot of hassle. As others have said, if you need it once, it will pay for itself.

I only use 4WD about twice per year but when I need it...I really need it! Last Summer while checking into a CG in Ohio I had to pull off on to a grassy area on a slight incline. After checking in, I went to pull to the camping spot and the wheels started spinning and there was no way to get out. 4WD was really worth it in that case.

I also went 4wd. But I live in the northeast with terrible weather conditions in the winter. I also camp on the beach and boondock camp up in the Adirondacks. 4wd was never a consideration for me. It was a given. I think it all depends on where you live and where you camp. Plus I guess when I think truck I think 4wd. More capability.

Also something to keep in mind is that where you camp today may not be where you camp in the future. Tastes change and you may want to do something different like camping on a beach. If you have 4wd than go right ahead. If you have 2wd than your options are limited. I try to remove limitations within my control.
